DH and I have been researching hs vs ps and trying to make the best decision for our family. Last night, I was talking to a nine year old girl in our neighborhood about what she learns in school, what she likes, etc.

She told me that she had library class this year. I assumed this class is where they learned the dewey decimal system, the history of libraries, toured a library, etc. No, all they did was learn how to do research on the computer. I assumed this was a special one or two week program built into their language/English class. Nope. An entire semester of surfing the net with no real goal for an hour each day.

Personally, that is a clear reason to hs. Either way, wish us luck as we research and decide what is best for us.

Honestly, given the number of times I've seen unschoolers post that their kid told someone, "We never learn anything," I wouldn't put too much stock in a 9-year-old's description of their educational activities.

When my ds was in ps last year he spent his entire year in "robotics" class online, as directed by the teacher, since they didn't have any actual electronics in the class.

And his home ec teacher regularily gave the kids colouring pages for class. This was a grade 7 class. I had assumed that she was having a bad year, but other moms in the neighborhood have told me she's been doing this for at least a decade.

I could go on and on about the crappy educational decisions that my ds's teachers have made in the past, and things I've heard from other parents. Having ds in school last year totally erased any doubts that I had had about the quality of the education I could provide him at home.

By the way, this was a special, alternative, project-based, academically advanced program. I'd hate to think what the "remedial" kids are doing in that school right now
