I have my third sinus infection in about two years. It doesn't sound like that many, but the first one I had for more than 4 months before I got sick enough to get my butt to the doctor and find out what was wrong. They told me that some sinus infections respond to antibiotics and some don't. They gave me some antibiotics, I took them, nothing happened so they said the only thing they could do was give me more. I declined and it went away on its own eventually. The second one also went away on its own after a couple of months. This one...I'm not sure how long I've had it...a couple of weeks maybe.

I've noticed over the past couple of days that I can smell and taste nothing. I deeply (or at least until my nose completely plugged up and I ended up in a fit of coughing ) inhaled some eucalyptus and felt some cooling in my nose and down my throat but didn't smell it. Can't smell dirty diapers, coffee....nothing. I can't taste either. I can 'feel' that something is bitter or sweet, but not taste it.

I figured that it was because I'm really, really stuffy. But then this morning my mother (who is very into everything in the medical world, especially drugs, drugs and more drugs) called and noted that I sounded horrible. Told her what was going on and she said I should really go to the doctor because if I don't it can cause permenant damage. My great aunt no longer tastes or smells anything - all BECAUSE OF A SINUS INFECTION!! I didn't tell her that I can't smell or taste anything right now, because I was too busy freaking out and I didn't want the "and this is why we always, always go to a doctor and do what they say" talk.

Please tell me I'll smell again. How can I get rid of it? I don't want to try antibiotics again. I did buy some resp. sys. tea, cough syrup, nasal spray that relieves sinus pressure and vitamin c last night. I also have a multi vitamin/mineral. I was gonna try that stuff. What else can I do?

OOps, I see now that someone else posted about what can be done. I just posted without checking in an 'OH MY GOD!' moment.

Seriously? Y'all shoot water up your nose frequently? Ugh. I have an aversion to sticking stuff up my nose. I thought I was doing well with two sprays in each nostril last night. I'm gonna try it though

I'm still looking for reassurance that I will not lose my sense of taste or smell, though....anybody?

hey ho!

i had that happen with my last sinus infection and i did end up doing the antibiotics which of course gave me a killer yeast infection. i was like you in that i could smell absolutely zilch. i could cut garlic and hold it right under my nose and it was nothing - like water. i did some googling and got a little worried about losing my sense of smell since i did read some of those horror stories. i think what it was (my personal theory) was just swelling and congestion in the upper regions of my sinuses (can't remember their fancy names). it eventually got better. i think it would have w/o the abx, too. i did get a neti pot (google that one for more info) and i think that helps, though i think it may help w/ prevention more than cure an existing sinus infection. i tried saline mist and a bulb syring w/ homemade salt water solution, too, but i like the neti pot best.

i can smell everything now just fine!

Thanks so much for replying. The less sleep I get, the more easily my mom freaks me out with her horror stories about the dangers of letting things work their course.

So now I know...if I live through this, I will be able to smell and taste once again.

If anyone is sick of hearing me preach the Gospel of the Neti... Here I go again! It's funny that I have seen so many sinus/allergy posts lately. Well, I guess it's not that weird -- it is Spring after all! Duh!

Anyway, here is what I posted recently in Natural Home and Body Care:

"I have used a Neti Pot for about 6 years now, and have completely converted my skeptical-but-sinusitis-plagued dad over to it as well.

I had sugery on my sinuses in 1995 and 2000. After the second time, my sinus polyps were growing back just 2 weeks later. I started using the Neti with salinated water and have had no sinus infections, no serious allergic reactions, and have regained my senses of taste and smell, which were all but gone for several years.

I would recommend using a real Neti only because it has a longer spout. You need to be able to have the end in your nostril while you tilt your head the right way so that you don't have the feeling of getting pool water up your nose. If you have that sensation, you need to adjust the position of your head.

I usually do mine over the sink, but my dad uses his in the shower so he doesn't have to worry about slopping it all over. My aunt has started using it, and I also recommended it to my fertility doc!

Like I said, I have used salt water (made with pickling salt because it is so fine and dissolves so quickly), but I also have tried this: http://www.isabellacatalog.com/prod....21306/inv/2835

If you're coming down with something, I think the Neti Wash is good, but for everyday use, just the salt water is fine."

My sense of smell was totally gone for about 4 years altogether, with my sense of taste as well. I did have moments where I seriously thought it was gone for good. But it did come back completely and sometimes is very, very acute!

HTH!

Get thee a Neti pot! It's not as weird as it sounds. As the PP have said, it could be of serious help to you.

Also, have you tried homeopathic therapies? Boericke & Tafel makes Alpha SH for sinus headache and congestion. It won't cure the infection, but it might help with your symptoms in the meantime. Also, if you have a fever, belladonna might be good for you -- it's a fever reducer and swelling reducer, too, which couldn't hurt your sinus passages.

Hope you feel better soon!
