Here in Utah we have a bill in the state legislature that would effectively risk 95% of women out of DE midwifery care. We're fighting it, of course.<br><br>
I've heard that there's a law in the legislature North Dakota that would outlaw homebirth and that they're prosecuting a midwife in Pennsylvania.<br><br>
Can I get a quick shout out if there's legal trouble with midwifery or homebirth in your state? I'm just trying to gauge if it's coincidence or if this is a nationwide trend.

Illinois still allows midwives. They "require" that they all be CNM's although we have many lay midwives.<br><br>
Illinois DOES NOT allow freestanding birth centers. The extent of this and how it applies to home birth has not been a huge issue as of yet.<br><br>
However, many CNM's are pushing for freestanding birth centers (and coming under fire), especially in populated areas!

You may want to take a quick look at From Calling to Courtroom (<a href="http://www.fromcallingtocourtroom.net" target="_blank">www.fromcallingtocourtroom.net</a>) for more information about the state of affairs for DEMs in the U.S.<br><br>

Hey Ryleigh's Mommy, can you tell me if there are any groups banding together to fight the legislation? I used to apprentice with Jill Kent before she retired and will now be working with Beth Bergeron (midwife that is buying Jill's practice). Anyway, we have a ND mom due next month (though I'm backup student for that one, other student has first dibs) and we're sick at the thought of any other ND moms having to do without a midwife. I'll be writing the Fargo Forum and Bismarck paper today to help bring awareness to the issue, but any info you might have would be great.

I don't know of anyone really "banding together", but a bunch of the ladies in my moms club wrote the senators who were trying to pass the bill. They got back some snotty comments from the legislators <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/irked.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="irked">:<br>
Though they did at least say that they are considering licensing MW's in ND so that they would be able to attend HBs<br>
It sounds like they are just trying to keep laypeople from delivering babies, and didn't realize that in this state, MW's aren't licensed so they wouldn't be able to either, leaving women to birth at home unassisted.

Hello! My name is Karla Wiegrefe. I am a homebirthing mom here in ND. I have started this list to keep all of us who are interesting in keeping midwifery legal in ND updated on current and future legislation in this state. I am inviting all of you to join so that you can receive legislative updates, calls to action, and regional meeting notices. This is a notice only list (you will only receive notices from the moderators ... so it will be low volume). Please spread the word to other supporters that this list exists. We want to reach as many people as possible to keep us all current.<br><br>
Thank you! ~Karla</td>

I hope I did that right, I'm not to savvy with linking and stuff.<br><br>
I was going to see the midwife in the article for the coming birth but I decided to go with another. Reading this still it makes me feel so threatened, attacked, judged, violated, oppressed, squelched, angry etc etc etc.<br><br>
It is so sickening. Rather than addressing the true problem - the incredibly flawed and ever worsening hospital birth system - they put their energy into to FORCING us into it by prosecuting those who provide safe alternatives. VERY, VERY FRIGHTENING.<br><br>

The ND birth action has info on a meeting being held in Bismarck on Thurs and we're trying to get one set up in FGO-MHD in the next few days. I have info posted under bill 2377 and will keep updating.
