Hi all, just wondering, if caries are caused by the s. mutand bacteria, would a course of oral antibiotics help? if not, why not. I have been reading the archives (hours worth!) but did not see this addressed.
TIA
I don't think I can answer your question scientifically,
but.....as I understand s.mutans is naturally occuring in everyone's mouth. It is when the bacteria is at a high rate from poor dental hygeine, that cavities occur. Reason why to brush and keep the bacteria at a normal level.

That's pretty darn scientific to me, malamamama!

That's exactly it.

It is neither desirable (nor probably even possible) to kill off all the s. mutans. Remember, in bacterial populations it's all about balance. Kill off s. mutans, and who grows out of control in its place? Yucky.
