We have ants in our kitchen. We've had problems with them for years. Before we had the baby we bought those trap things where they walk on it and carry it back to their nest and it supposedly kills them all (yes, I feel bad about that but we were sick of dealing with ants in our kitchen). They didn't work and I got paranoid about them traipsing little poison all over the kitchen.

Now we have a baby and we tried bay leaves (per the Mothering magazine recommendation) and that seems to slow them down but the little buggers just find alternate routes.

We can't find where they're getting in. We've looked. I don't want to use another food type thing or anything caustic (like coffee or cayenne), and chalk won't work for where they are. Any suggestions? I keep the kitchen VERY clean. No foodstuff out anywhere. I freaked the other week when they were crawling on the baby's Gripe Water bottle in the cabinet. I rinsed it off really well and put it in a ziplock. But I hate using ziplocks.

Any suggestions or are we destined to have an anty kitchen?

Thanks!

Dang, I wish I could help. We used chili powder as a short-term fix, and were able to find the point of entry and caulk it.

I wonder if they are getting in behind a piece of molding/trim board?

I honestly don't know where they're getting in. We're in a pretty big house and the kitchen's on the second story. They have to be either climbing up the outside of the house (we've looked and can't see any ants anywhere on the house from the ground level), or coming in the basement or ground floor and going up behind the walls. We've looked everywhere and can't see them, but I assume they're in the walls somewhere.

Bay leaves worked for a while, but then I realized it was just like a detour: they'd walk around the bay leaves. I had them shoved in every crack and crevice around the sink (since that's where they primarily show up).

Could they be coming up through the drains in the sink?!? The other day I saw some around the floor by the dishwasher. I scooted the baby out of the room and stomped on all of them. I felt bad for killing them, but I'm tired of ants in my kitchen! I got down and looked all around the dishwasher and there's one little hole but shoving a bay leaf in there doesn't work as then it's on her level and the baby wants to eat it...

It hasn't been as bad this past week, but inevitably when there's someone coming to visit, the ants show up. :

I moved into a place once overrun with ants, especially the kitchen. I killed plenty of them, but eventually vinegar worked. It actually killed some of them and really repelled them, but I had to spray it a lot. Good thing is, it won't hurt anyone that gets into it. Worth a try anyway. I've also heard lemon juice would work, but didn't try it. Personally it seemed apple cider vinegar worked a little better but if you only have distilled I'd use that.
For cracks and crevices you can always pour Borax into them, it'll get rid of anything.

I've had ants invade my dorm room for nothing other than water! There was no food to speak of and they weren't trapsing around looking for crumbs - they were walking in a straight line to our sink!!
They came through the walls and into the house around the windows - both in my dorm and in my apartment that is how they got/get in.

Borax and baby powder. I know, odd combo! I was desperate one day as the Borax wasn't totally doing it. So I mixed in baby powder.. 'cause.. that's the only other powder I could find.

It did it!

What works to keep our ants down is to constantly spray their walking trail with a homemade household cleaner. It's a mix of Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap, purified water, borax, vinegar, and a drop of tea tree oil.

Every time I see an ant I spray some cleaner over the ant and the area around the ant (assuming that's a trail).

It usually takes me about 2 weeks of this every spring and then they're gone for the season.

My concern about Borax and baby powder both are that we have pets and a toddler who likes to stick her hand in little places and lick her fingers after.

I'll try the vinegar and Dr. Bronner's combo and see if that helps.

Thank you!

My exterminator says dish-soapy water. It works great on asian beetles too.

One thing that might help is to plant some peony's. I have a peony tree and two bushes within 15 feet of my back door. The ants go for those, and the peony's rely on the ants to help them bloom. (Plus, you can tell your dh that they are for getting rid of ants! ) Needless to say, i've never had a major ant problem, maybe one or two now and again, or if the kids drop something sugary by the back door, but nothing problematic.

Borax in maple (or any) syrup. Put it in plastic containers with holes in the lids, or simply in flat lids, under furniture (where your baby and animals won't be able to go). Also, just a tablespoon of this mix per trap is enough, so if anyone came in contact with it, the quantity or borax in it wouldn't be enough to do any damage.

I think it's one part borax/7-9 parts syrup. I don't know a single person for whom it hasn't worked.
