I'm interested in getting DS and myself more outdoors and involved in wildlife more...I heard of 4H and think that could be one of the things I'd like to get him involved in. Any one do 4H? what is it really and how old do they have to be to do stuff?

I was too little, but my sister was in 4H. She loved it. She got to show a sheep and help out on a farm. Now mind you this wasn't much new to us because we were born on a dairy farm, but I guess it was novel because of the sheep. But that said, it tends to be a very real experience for the children. By that I mean they show you EVERYTHING that goes on; from insemination of animals to castrating the rams. I personally think it is a good idea. My niece had friends growing up in the city who would not believe her when she told them that hamburger came from a cow. I know I would want my son to be a little more knowledgeable about the way the world works, all of it. She started in 4H when she was about 9-10 years old. We moved away before I was old enough to join.

DS1 currently wants to be a farmer when he grows up so we looked into 4H a little. There is a group that works at Kinder Farm Park but the kids have to be 6. The 4H website says they have activities for 5 yr olds but the local group starts at 6. There is also something at Sunrise Organic Farm in Gambrills (the old Horizon/Naval Academy Dairy Farm). I haven't looked into that yet but we will probably get involved next spring if he still wants to be a farmer!
