I know, it's a long shot, but I've gotta try - I'm here for the trees not the schools, and I long for connections with people I can walk to...I'm on NE 17th Avenue...between Stanton and Knott...come over for tea!

Me!

Okay, so I don't live in Irvington right now, but rather Kenton, but I grew up in Irvington and my mom still lives there and I'm around there all the time. I think nothing of driving down there so I'd love to get togther! I'm really pregnant right now, but love walking in that neighborhood and checking out gardens. PM me if you'd like to get together.
Not in Irvington, but sorta close...I am across MLK, just north of Fremont. We walk to Irving Park regularly and will be out and about a whole lot more come June when I finish teaching. Plus, we just got our hands on a used bike trailer to see if it is something we will use regularly and worth investing more in a much nicer one. Yippee! I hope to see you around. Depending on what happens with my job situation for next year...we may be very interested in hooking up with some home/unschooling mamas/kids.
Hi! So how do you all like the neighborhood? I am thinking about moving my brood over your way. I notice at least one of you is home/unschooling...is there a community for you in Irvington? And what do you know about the schools? Hmmm....i want to pick your brains!
My babe's only 4 months, so I can't comment on the schools yet. We LOVE our neighborhood!!! The park is close and we can walk to groceries, shops, coffee, and restaurants. There are sidewalks throughout, so it is walking friendly. It's also super close to downtown, NW Portland, Beaumont, Mississippi, and Interstate.

Hi,

I've been in NE Portland for several years, and when we had the chance to move to Irvington proper, we took it, so that we could live right in the middle of the city, with lots of nice trees around, a safe sidewalk for our kids to play on, walk to grocery shopping, etc. but, I have been sad to learn that anyone outside the mainstream is pretty much shunned around here, and our neighbors, though polite, simply tolerate us "hippies" and probably wonder why we don't keep our lawn looking perfect or why we have kids who are home during the weekdays playing out front, etc. Our street is beautiful, and yet deadly quiet, even in the summer, it's sad. I observed at both Irvington Elementary and Alameda Elementary and was surprised to see the typical un-inspiring curriculum, shaming of children, punishments, and unchecked bullying/teasing, as well as a ton of restrictive safety rules and spoiled children learning blind conformity. It inspired me to continue unschooling, though we did briefly try Trillium Charter School for my very outgoing assertive daughter. My SIL liked Hollyrood OK, except for the intense academic pressure, even in the Kindergarten, but it's closing now anyway.

In NE there are some free/inexpensive alternative options, like Shining Star School and the new Village Charter School (both Waldorf), and Trillium Charter School...and homeschooling co-ops...

Thaks for the info. Do you know anything about Sabin Elementary? I think that would be our school.

I live on 22nd Ave. Between Stanton and Siskiyou. And whenever I have walked down to Mio with my 2 sons, I try to walk 17th, but alas, I have never seen you. Do you ever play at the new field on Klickitat and 23rd?
Hey! We're on 22nd and Fremont! We just moved here at the beginning of December. We're renting while we search for a house to buy. We love the neighborhood, but we haven't seen anything affordable (for us) in the area.

Ellen,
That is the same for us! The house prices are over the moon. At least compared to rents. How old is Raina? Gabe is 3 this month.

Thank you! I have 2 December babies and 2 summertime babies. How old are your kids?

Not that age seems to matter much, my 5 and 7 year olds are off playing with their 8 and 11 year old friends right now...I think it's more about whether the mamas feel a connection...

Hi there. I live in Alameda (technically) @ 23rd and Prescott. I have a 4 month old and I am always looking for cool people to hang out with in this neck of the woods. I work during the day out of Sabin. My office is there but I do not actually work for the school so I cannot really comment on the education there....although I have heard relatively good things. Especially regarding the art program.

If you all get together, I would love to do so as well. I will keep my eyes peeled if anyone has a get together.
