Hello!

I'm due in July and would like to start interviewing pediatricians. My beloved pediatrition that I used for my teenagers is now practicing in Cumming which I consider too far. I have big kids so we use our PCP for most things!

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!
If you're in East Cobb, Alpharetta wouldn't be that far for you. I have heard good things about Dr. Kute from 5 or 6 moms in the last month. I'd better schedule a get-to-know-you appointment topmorrow before she gets full and stops accepting new patients. :LOL

Kay - I'm thinking about changing pediatricians. I live in Marrietta (E. Cobb). A couple of days ago I was reading one of the GA threads. They were talking about pediatricians in the marietta/alpharetta area. Here is what they said:

Dr. Kute (holistic AP Pediatrician in Alpharetta) made a recommendation to the Georgia Birth Network a little while ago for a pediatrician in Marietta,

Dr. Stephanie Poole. She said she is extremely supportive of breastfeeding and they worked together 4 yrs ago. Her office address is 707 Whitlock Ave D30, Marietta GA 30064. You can reach her at 770-428-1117 or 770-499-8909r.
also

Dr. laura bleekrode. shes w/ Alphretta Pediatrics too. has 7 kids and bf them all. shes currently co-sleeping and bfing her 2.5 year old. we love her!

Margaret Boudreaux with Alpharetta pediatrics is a good one. They have an office in Cumming and an office in the Roswell/Alpharetta area. Everything you mentioned she supports... I like her a lot.

You can try one of these doctors. It seems Dr. Poole is the only doctor in the immediate area that has come up in conversation. Hope this helps. Good luck with the pregnancy.

BRIGHTEST BLESSINGS!

Thank you both so very much!

My big kids pediatrician was so wonderful and supported me in both breastfeeding (until my daughter was 4), no vaccinations, and my use of homeopathics. He was so very awesome and I was sad to find out that he practiced only in Cumming and not in Roswell/Alpharetta.

After many years of commuting downtown for work, I've made an effort to have everything as close to home as possible so I'm on the search for all new baby resources!

I'll be going to the LLL meeting next week in East Cobb - do either of you attend that group?

Hi Kay! I think you will have great luck at the East Cobb LLL meeting asking for local peds. Before I went back to work FT, I was attending the Kennesaw LLL meetings and there were always a lot of good discussions about which Peds to avoid and which ones to seek out. So definitely ask there, since most of those mamas will be close to you.

Personally, I am thinking about switching to Dr Poole, since she is in Marietta. We are on our 4th Ped for DS. But I am sticking with his Ped for the short term until we get some issues with his autism worked out (paperwork). But i doubt his current practice would be the best non-vaxing, BF-ing supportive place. Pretty mainstream. And far away!

A lot of people in Marietta use Kenmar Peds and we started there. There are a couple docs are ok (Dr Dixon), but stay away from Dr Clements. He is well respected, but terrible for BFing. He suggested out of the blue that i give my 10w son juice. (WTF??) And told my girlfriend at her sons 9 mo visit that "9 months is good enough for BFing". Blech! And terrible bedside manner. But for some reason, I always hear his name for a referral. Just thought I would warn you.

Anyway, stop by the doula table at Bellies in Bloom tomorrow and introduce yourself! Would love to meet another mothering mama in person!

Not to hijack the thread, but i have a related question! I am due, well, really could be any day now and I still haven't interviewed peds! I was looking for a family physician, but this Dr Poole seems very cool. Trouble is, i'm looking at my insurance book and she is on my insurance, but her hospital priviledges are not kennestone (where i will be). is it ok to just pick one randomly to check out baby in the hosp. and then switch to someone else? anyone else been at this situation?

If your chosen Ped doesnt have priveldges at Kennestone, then you will just get the on-call Ped to examine the newborn while in the hospital. And then you can schedule an appt with your Ped for the week (or so) after the birth.

My husband and I have a consultation meeting with Dr. Poole next week and I'll let all of the know how it goes. I've talked with her staff a couple of times getting the meeting set up and they've been awesome so I'm hoping that it will go well. The staff makes a difference to me too! For example...

When my son was born - even before I was a LLL'er and Mothering reader - I refused to sign the sign-in sheet because it came from a formula company! I wasn't "ugly" about it but I didn't think that it was appropriate for a Doctor's office to promote formula feeding! The secretary was really mean to me and basically blew me off as a freak but I mentioned it to the Doctor and he didn't even know that they were using that!!! He was angry and it was removed immediately and I never saw anything from the formula companies there again...

Anyway, I'll let you all know what I find out!

The East Cobb LLL meetings are at a library, btw. I've been attending but missed this month (back problems). I've also been going to the West Cobb meetings - they haven't been too far away. If you want some info (they're the third Tuesday of the month), PM me.

sara - yeah, you can pick any ped to randomly check out your baby in the hospital and then switch.

I'm considering switching to Dr. Pool too. BUT, I went to the local LLL meeting in E. Cobb and another peds name was dropped. Dr. Mark Long @ Kennesaw Pediatrics
http://www.kennesawpediatrics.com/who_we_are.html

During the LLL meeting - i met a woman who interviewed Dr. Poole and Dr. Poole was against delayed vax and non vaxing. That's all I know for now.

Oh, Dr Long is like 5 mins from me! What did you hear about him? I would love a Ped that close, especially since we are planning a HB and I dread travelling all over Atlanta for the well baby visit within a few days of birth.

Jenn - The woman I spoke with just had her baby two weeks ago. She decided to go with Dr. Long because he was "ok" with delayed and selective vaxing. Her main concern was finding a ped who was willing to vax on her schedule. She interviewed him and really liked him.

She picked Dr. Long over Dr. Poole because of the vaxing issue. Also, Dr. Longs office has a sick area in his waiting room and Dr. Poole's office did not.

Both doctors are supportive of BF and co-sleeping.

That's all I know.

Thanks so much for the vax info Charmed Being regarding Dr. Poole! I was also looking at Dr. Long (one of my midwives uses him) but didn't want to drive to Kennesaw.

I really liked what I saw on Dr. Long's site - http://www.kennesawpediatrics.com/ and he is my back up if I didn't feel comfortable with Dr. Poole. I'm still scheduled for the interview with her and I'll let you all know how it goes...

Okay, I just moved back to the area and needed a pediatrician for my son. I don't do well baby visits, so really I only go when my babe is sick. I had wanted a ped. that was in sync with my philosophies on AP, GD, co-sleeping, no-vaxing, ebf'ing b/c that is what I had in NJ before we moved. But then I realized that I really don't care if my ped agrees with my parenting choices. Really, that is not their expertise. I will say, though, that I find Dr. Long to be really a good choice. I am comfortable with his diagnostic knowledge, and frankly I don't care about his opinion on anything else. That being said, I feel that he is pretty laid back about things. I just saw him the other day (having a new baby soon) and I mentioned again that we would not be vaxing and he said that although he doesn't recommend that and he feels vaxing is in the child's best interest, he would support my decision. So, who can argue with that? Good luck.
