Any freelance writers out there?

Hi!

I'm not yet a mama, but DH and I are gearing up to TTC #1 in late summer/early fall. I've been a writer/editor/public relations specialist for many years now, specifically in the higher education and healthcare fields, and I was hoping to parlay that experience into some freelance writing gigs. I'd love to be able to be home with my children, but I'd like to contribute to the family finances, as well as continue to write.

If anyone has any experience with this and/or suggestions, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!

I worked in educational publishing for years before dd was born. I continued freelancing in the field since then, and still do a little work here and there, but mostly I run a web toy store now. People with experience writing medical/healthcare stuff seem to be pretty highly sought after. Two good resources are:

www.mediabistro.com (you have to register to see their jobs page), which has great info on full-time/part-time/freelance projects, and

www.writersdigest.com, which has good info if you want to write articles and pitch them to magazines.

In my experience, pitching is much harder, but some people love it. It does offer more flexibility, since you can send out as many or as few pitches as you like.
Thanks, Katie!

That's great information. I'll check out the sites.

Best,
K
