Two or three weeks ago I saw my grandmother and mentioned that I'd like to know how to knit but would never have time to learn. She said she could teach me right then and showed me about 4 stitches. Then said just practice, practice, practice. Whenever I asked how I was doing she said just practice. Well . . . it's looking lumpier and bumpier the more I practice. I have a book and it looks like I'm doing just what the picture shows, but it isn't pretty. I don't want to keep practicing wrong and make it habit, but I don't want to wait and forget either.

Anyone know of any good learn to knit websites?
Is there any particular reason that it gets realllly lumpy? What am I doing? (I only know how to knit right now; I haven't even learned to purl)

Thanks

Its probably getting lumpy like because when you will learn to purl you will knit one row purl the next and so on so it will be smooth and look like little V type shapes.

as for good web sites- I believe www.knitting.com or maybe its www.knittinghelp.com ibut the one I learned from is www.stitchguide.com

Good luck!

www.knittinghelp.com is AWESOME. They have videos for everything!!!

When you knit only, that is called garter stitch... you should have rows of little u's separated by small gaps which have v's if you look very closely (front and back look the same). When you learn to purl, you will achieve "stockinette stitch" where all the v's are on one side and all the bumps are on the other. This is because purling is reverse knitting for when you go from left to right rather than right to left (if you couldn't Return on a typewriter, you'd have to type backwards, yes?).

My Suggestions:

1. Stick to garter stitch until you are super confident, then learn to purl. You can make a really cute scarf or purse with just a rectangle!

2. Get some circular needles and try knitting in the round-- it is exactly the same as knitting straight, except you always go in the same direction so you don't need to purl to get stockinette.

Best knitting advice you will ever receive: Just keep doing it!!!

You will love it and it is addicting!! Start saving $ for your yarn stash, LOL

Well I already see one thing I'm doing wrong - I'm only using the tip of the needle so my stitches are really tight and then I have trouble doing the next row. Still not sure why it's lumpy but I'll keep watching.

Thanks for the sites; I'll definitly look around. The only reason I want to learn to knit is to make soakers. It seeeems like it should be easy anyway :LOL
