Any Olympia mamas?

Dh and I lived in Oly for a while, and then moved back to Ohio, where we are from. We are thinking of giving it another go, though...maybe this fall.

But one of the reasons we moved back to OH is cause we didn't know any cool parents, didn't really have any friends, etc...I didn't know about MDC, we didn't know about parenting gatherings and LLL meetings, etc. Dh went to Evergreen, but he's kinda shy, so he didn't make too many friends in 6 months.

Just wanna see if there are any Oly mamas out there interested in hooking up with a slightly nutty, very crunchy family. We have a toddler who is 29 months, and are having a new baby in October.

Basically, I wanna make some friends if I move out there, and I am hoping there are some cool MDC mamas who may wanna hang out/do playdates/potlucks/etc....

Also wanted to see if anyone knows of any great homebirth midwives.

Hope you get to move back! I'm in Tacoma but I know that there are alot of Oly. mom's here on the boards. There is a homebirth midwife based out of Oly. but I can't remember her name. Indiegirl here on the boards had her last baby with her and I think she is planning on using her again for this baby. Maybe pm her.

Good Luck~

We're very near Oly. I'm on the lighter side of crunchy, but definitely nutty
I have a dd who's almost 3 and a wee babe. Hope you move back!

I live about 20 minutes away, maybe 30.

We don't go there very often. Honestly I haven't lived in WA very long and probably couldn't even find it on my own!
:

But I am close by!

I think they have a bunch of LLL groups in Oly. I have heard of night meetings, toddler meetings, etc.
I went to the group in Yelm once and haven't been able to get back yet.

I am preg too, and I have a really nice HB MW here in my town. I had no problem finding one, even covered by my ins.
Didn't you need one that would do HBAC?
I am sure someone from LLL or a CNM or even a church could hook you up. I haven't found any lay MWs here (haven't looked too much) but they have to be here somewhere. I am sure every VABC or breech woman doesn't just march herself to the nearest hospitial.

Anyway, welcome back!
(We moved here from IL and I think it is SO much nicer!)

Hi Faith!

Actually, I think we are going to wait till the baby is born before we move. We definitely wanna come back, but I have anxiety about birthing in WA. First of all, I am worried about establishing a good relationship with a MW in 8 weeks. I know I can find one....but I am slow to warm and trust care providers (due to some really awful experiences) and I don't think I can birth with anyone I am not totally comfortable with.

Also, if I need a hospital transfer, we won't have anyone to stay with our daughter. So that means dh couldn't come, and he's miss the birth.

And, if I did need another c/sec, I wouldn't have much help in my recovery, and again, we would have nobody to stay with dd so dh could come visit me and the baby.

So, as much as we'd love to move in the summer instead of the rainy season, I think we will wait till Feb-March or so.

But, I wanna meet you ALL then! I'll totally need some cool mama friends!

HI, I am in Oly.

There are quite a few of us on here. Actually Oly is the crunchiest place I hae ever been, so I dont know how you can worry about not meeting other moms. Every time I leave the house I meet a crunchy mom.
I have a friend here who is from Ohio. She moved here last year. She has a daughter who turns two in July and one that was just born in April. Her dh also went to evergreen.
There is an Oly mamas network on Yahoogroups. Just go to www.yahoogroups.com and enter olympia mamas inthe search and you should find it. Go to the database and look up the members list. You will learn more about the people on the board there.
Also, there are llli groups and a very active homeschool comunity. The Oly library is a great place to meet crunchy moms

She totally said it. Olympia is totally alternative-friendly! I love this town. And although I felt really really weird about it, I just had someone off the MDC boards babysit my kids so I could go to my hypnobabbies instructor training. (Coolest thing ever, see the new link I'm going to make on this thread!) It was a last-minute need, and dh had just been interviewed for a promotion the day before, so wanted to avoid taking the day off, and it worked out great, it was just soo weird saying, "I left my kids with a total stranger I met on the internet."

Most the area moms from MDC are on this thread

Cant decided- but I do own a home in MI--- hummm... Anyway- hope to get together and have some play dates here in oly soon!

Ang-

Didn't you live on the UP? We have a house up there, in Copper Harbor! Small world, huh? And now we might be buds in Oly.

I would guess we will move in late winter. I really don't wanna do the cross-country drive in snow again, and it's be nice to get to Oly when the rainy season is close to over, so I can meet more folks.

We're in Oly too! I think you and I might have talked about that when I ended up moving here, but I can't remember for sure. I'm on my 2nd year here. I'm just in the begining phases of making some friends since I am pretty shy too. Maybe we could all have a get together sometime too.

Sierra
We definately need to get together an Olympia mommies playgroup or something.
beieve me, rainy season here is waay better than snowy season there!! I would rather move in the winter. The difference is so profound you will want to cry!! My Ohio friend used to tell me with glee"It is snowing in Ohio right now" when it was 50 and drizzling here.

OT!! Hi, Sierra!!!

Oh I know...I used to live in Oly during the rainy season. We moved back to Ohio in February and it SUCKED. We had 2 more months of snow before I got a break.
I hate Ohio winters. They last November-April.

I'm in OLy!
Just moved back last month after being gone for a few years, but I'm so happy to be here. TONS of supportive cool mamas and playgroups, parks, co-ops, home-schoolers, you name it. I guess with everthing though it's how much you put yourself out there. I am super shy too when it comes to meeting new people, and it took awhile, but I now know so many great mamas. I have a DD who is 27 months and would love to hang out.
