I started using Mint.com a week ago for budgeting, and I'm totally obsessed with it. I love the progress bars across the budget so you can literally see how much you've used up so far in the month. I was using Quicken before, which was way more than I needed; this is perfect for tracking a monthly budget.

I hadn't seen it before, but I'll definitely check it out!

Oh, I didn't realize you have to input your bank account and credit card information for synchronization. It appears that this is ALL it does. How would one track cash spending with mint? I'm not comfortable with this.

Yeah, I don't think it's really built for cash spending - I love it because I pay for everything on a card, so all of my transactions are visible on my account statements. So syncing your accounts makes it really easy to track everything (totally secure, btw - Mint doesn't store any of the information). You can split transactions, so I suppose you could split up all your cash withdrawals, but the budget tracker is more oriented for debit/credit transactions.

I like it because you can categorize each transaction as a budget line, much like Quicken. Since it updates every time you log in, I just check daily and make sure things are where they're supposed to be.

Ah, man. I just recycled my copy of Entrpreneur magazine. I bought it about a month ago so it was a fairly recent issue.

In there it had an article about the guy that started Mint.com and I thought it said that the way they make money is through advertisers because they use your information to personalize the ads. It didn't say they specifically tracked what users purchased with their cards but that was the impression that I got.

Anyone have a copy of the magazine that can tell us what is said exactly???

Never heard of it before. But when I read the subject of this thread I was thinking, "Sure, I like mint with chocolate, and peppermint, and..."

it got a huge amount of categories wrong ....

I guess a lot of local stores are set up by their address & so CVS and publix would not come out as "pharmacy" or "grocery" and I was spending time changing the categories.

it was too annoying

I really like www.Yodlee.com as an alternative. It seemed to get more of our categories right, and it was better at tracking between months.

We were using it but now that we've switched to the envelope method it doesn't do us a bit of good since it doesn't allow you to input your cash spending.

I've posted it a few times already in this forum and I PROMISE you I am not working for this company, but www.mvelopes.com has completely changed the way I budget... think envelope system meets online money management tool:. It costs a little bit but I've more than made up for that in savings and peace of mind.

Decided to S/O instead of hijacking your thread!
