Hello ladies,
For all my life I had a tendency to gain weight, I mean it has always been so easy for me.I had never been a skinny girl. Since going vegan, my weight became stable. It varies btw. 116-123 pounds.
Although I eat well,I haven't gained much weight during pregnancy. My doctor was surprised to see that I gained just one pound since last month.(I'm 17 weeks now) I'm 116 pounds now and she told me that from this month on, I'm expected to gain more weight. Though the baby is at its normal weight and she's healthy.
I have read elsewhere on the web that veg*n pregnants don't put on as much weight as other women do.
I never eat junk food, I'm having tons of fruits, veggies, salads, walnuts, nuts etc. I haven't eaten much beans lately, because of the hot weather going on here. What's the situation with you? And what are you eating these days?

ok so I don't think I could actually call myself vegan. Especially now, but prior to being pregnant my parents and I were following the book "Eat to Live", which follows a vegan diet for the first 6 weeks (possibly more). I plan on going back to it when I feel some what normal agian because,I loved it, never felt better but sometime after the 6 weeks I started having a really hard time keeping up with it. Turns out that was a tell tale sign that I was pregnant. Our current weights are miles apart since I am quite a bit heavier than you which has made it easier for the midwives I see to not worry about me losing 20 pds since getting pregnant. I don't know how any of this helps but I think if your healthy, your little one is healthy and strong than doctors know or need to know that every pregnant women is different and gains their weight in different ways and different times. Yes maybe more beans will help but don't let yourself get too caught up in it. Enjoy being pregnant.

All the best

I'm mostly vegetarian (I occasionally eat fish), and I have put on very little weight. I started out this pregnancy at 119, dropped to 116 when I got sick at 8 weeks, and am now fluctuating between 121 and 124 (depending on time of day, etc.). My doctor didn't seem concerned at 15 weeks, she was just glad that I was putting on any weight. She doesn't even know I'm vegetarian (she never asked, so I didn't think I needed to tell her), so I'm not sure if that would make a difference. She did say I should be putting on about a pound a week now, which I'm definitely not. I have thought many times that my small amount of weight gain and small belly size might have something to do with not eating meat since I don't have the growth hormones, etc. As long as the baby is OK when I go in for my u/s next Monday, I figure I won't worry about it.

My doula just assisted at a birth where the woman only gained 8 pounds total, and the baby was 11 pounds!

Vegan mama here...but having the opposite problem...
Everything I read says that will probably gain 4-5 lbs in the 1st trimester.
I'm in week 18 now and have gained 11 lbs.
Yikes!
Lots of avocados, beans, some tofu, nuts, whole grains, fruits veggies....
I think the concentration of fats (avos) and proteins are what are doing the trick.
P.S. If the idea of eating hot beans isn't appealing to you, you can make hummus and chill it. Eat a dollop of it on top of a salad...that and/or fresh guacamole? I'm happy to post a hummus recipe if you don't have one.

I'm veggie and have absolutely no problem gaining weight
I think the fact that I'm veggie and not vegan has a lot to do with it though. I eat a lot of cheese and I indulge in ice cream more than I should. I would just make sure that you get enough of the nutrients and plenty of protien. It's still early too so you may make up for it in a few weeks.

I'm vegan (for 8+ years). Right now I'm 19 weeks along and have gained 7-8 pounds. I'm small and thin to begin with. Last pregnancy I gained exactly 25 pounds, slow and steady. I did not gain 1 pound per week until after 30 weeks. In the last 5 weeks I've gained 3.5 pounds (according to my OB).

It sure isn't for lack of eating, although I do eat very healthy balanced meals. Personally I can't stand being harassed about how much weight I do or don't gain as long as the baby is healthy, which s/he is.

What am I eating? Let's see, today:
Breakfast: Kashi nuggets (cereal) with a whole peach, in soymilk. tea. garlic bread with hummus.
Lunch: rice and millet cooked in veg broth, mixed with kidney beans and sundried tomatoes in an eggplant/olive tapenade. salad with Annie's goddess dressing. water.
Lunch 2: garlic bread pizza (garlic bread, tomato sauce, tofutti mozarella). oj. gingersnaps and soymilk.
Dinner: Making lentil sloppy joes and coleslaw. Probably have the sloppy joes on whole wheat english muffins.
Seems before bed I usually have raisin bread and peanut butter.

Seems to me I'm eating plenty.
