Erikaa's post brought up something I've been meaning to post. I'm looking into switching to Dr. Sears. I wanted to interview her before dd was born, but she wasn't taking new patients.

Is she pro- extended breastfeeding & co-sleeping? I know she uses herbs and homeopathy and is supportive of no/selective/delayed vax, right? Anything anybody knows about her would be appreciated.

Dr. Sears is a good choice for AP parents. She is supportive of extended breastfeeding, but she did make comments to me when my dd was one about ways to start weaning her. I wasn't real keen on what she said, and I let her know I was not interested. She breastfed all of her children for several years. However, with her youngest, she weaned her cold turkey to go on a business trip at three years old. I thought that was cruel. I guess the only point of telling you that is that she is probably one of the most natural, ap friendly Dr. you will find in the area, but she certainly has her downfalls as well.

As for vas, she advocates delaying until age two. I don't think she is completely comfortable with not vaccinating at all, but will abide by your choice. The two she advocates chidren getting are tetnus and polio.

Good luck

We haven't switched to her yet but I did interview her and loved her. I'm waiting to see if our current ped, who we love, gives us a hard time about not vaccinating any more. I found Dr Sears to be okay with not vaccing at all. My discussion with her kind of touched on how vaccines are really needed for non breastfed babies, who don't build an immune system. She agreed that breastfed babies did not need them. She never said anything about wanting to do them later.
I really liked her and would switch in a heartbeat except she's farther for us to drive, not that we go in very often
, and because we really like our current ped. I guess I'm waiting for my current one to give me a reason to switch and then I will.

Do you have a good local doctor at the moment then? I am thinking of trying Dr Sears as our current ped is hopeless for us....gave me a hard time about vaccinating then starting on a lecture about rice cereal at 4 months...I sort of blocked out the noise of her at that point!!! I think I am quite prepared to drive to Clarksville to see Dr Sears if I can't find a local ped with similar ideas (we are in Annapolis).

Thanks for those! I have heard about Julie Venuti before ...when I tried to transfer to her she wasn't taken new patients unfortunately. I did however see Dr. Sears-Dementhon today and was incredibly happen with her! Beautiful location and really nice office.....none of the clinical feel that you get in most! And, very open minded in recommendations and very much a holistic approach using both allopathic and natural means...I felt comfortable with her and have decided to do the half hour drive!!!

I don't have much new to say about Dr. Sears, we love her! I interviewed her when I was pregnant and she was genuinely concerned about my baby then! She has been wonderful, easy to get in to see (luckily we haven't had to do that too often), and really listens to me. I do a lot of my own research and she has come to expect my input on certain things. I can't imagine going to anyone else!
