We've decided to withdraw our ds from a bad kindergarten situation, but dd will continue in Grade 4 at another school. Anyone else combining different types of schooling in one family? Does it work well? What are the pitfalls?

So far, everyone seems happy here...

My BIL and SIL have 3 kids each. Both have had their kids in and out of schools all at once and one at a time over the past decade. They have had success looking at each child's situation and doing what was best at the time. It's gone well over all. Only negative I can recall was BIL's eldest son and daughter are a year apart. In HS daughter was home schooled and middle-age son was angry that HE wasn't. He felt it would be "easier" at home etc. She only spent 3 days a week "schooling" vs his 5 days.

In your case I imagine things will go well since 1) it is the younger child homeschooling 2) your son is in K and 3) there is a larger age difference, etc. Just curious, what are your plans for next year?

That's key imo. We pulled my oldest ds out of ps in the 3rd grade. He very much wanted to homeschool. Dd was in K at the time and wanted to finish out the year. She went to homeschool groups/trips with us when she could and ds came to school functions when we had something going on there. (The only "downfall" was that, as we got more into homeschooling, it was hard for ME to take some of the ps stuff seriously.)

Since neither child was being forced into this situation, it worked out for us.

I don't have any longterm experience with this, as our dd decided to come home after Kindergarten, but I do know of other "mixed" families. I think the bottom line is, if the kids are happy where they are, it'll work out just fine.

Well, dd will definitely continue in public school. She loves it, and she has had a series of very good teachers. At present, the plan is that ds will start at the same school for Grade 1. It is a French Immersion school, so the children learn all day in French, rather than English. I am not so sure it will be the best setting for ds, so I am already laying some plans for homeschooling if need be, but I could be wrong.
