I had an abnormal pap smear a few years ago. They did an HPV check (negative) and a colposcopy to see more, which found nothing wrong. To be safe, I had follow up paps every four months for a year, all of which were normal.
At my last yearly pap I had an abnormal result again, so I'm back on a frequent-pap schedule (I've since had a normal pap, and am due for my next check in November).
My doctor said that this is not uncommon, and calls for caution, but definitely not worry!

Hang in there, Mama. I know it's hard, but the odds are in your favor!

When I had my bad pap the nurse at the colposcopy clinic told me that 6 out of 10 women who had initial "fishy" results didn't actually have anything wrong at all. The testers always err on the side of caution which is good but I think it's a damn shame that Dr's often seem to feel the need to freak people out (at least, mine certainly did! I have long since changed Dr's...). I guess they don't want to be seen to make light of it
:

but anyway hang in there, it's probably nothing, and if you DO have a few odd cells they'll zap them for you. You're smart to be cautious but don't panic.

Big hugs for you

I've had a few bad paps, with follow-up colposcopies and no cancer. I do have HPV though, and at my last bad pap, the midwife said, "Why do another colposcopy when we know what you have?" I haven't had an abnormal pap since then.
I loved her. I hope everything's okay for you.

I have always had abnormal paps. I have HPV but at one point before I was pg with my 2nd, they found I had cervical dysplasia--CIN II & CIN III and then they found carcinoma in situ with the 1st cone. I had a LEEP procedure done (basically a more extensive biopsy--they put me under for it) and then 2 cone biopsies (cold-knife conization). It was to remove the abnormal tissue and also they would check the outside of the removed tissue to see if there were still abnormal cells which is why I had 2 cones done. I have been fine since, had a very normal pregnancy after with my son, no bedrest, no problems at all even with a somewhat weakened cervix.

If you go yearly for your pap, I do not think you have much to worry about. I always "forgot" to go for mine so when they found the dysplasia, I hadn't been in 2.5 years. I remember to go now! I had to go every three months for 2 years after but I got pg with ds about 8 mos after the last surgery so they just continued checking after he was born. Now I go every 6 mos and starting next year I will be back to yearly.

Just don't let the Dr's scare you, I was told I may need to have my entire cervix removed or have a hysterectomy, then when that didn't happen I was told I would not be able to concieve ever again--I was 22-23 at the time--and that on the offchance I did it would be a very high-risk pg with the entire thing bedrest and blah blah. Needless to say I switched Drs! They really DON'T know it all and no one can predict something like this, even the all-knowing medical doctor.

And FWIW, my sister also has abnormal paps, ALWAYS, every single year. She does not have HPV and has never had any problem, they are just always abnormal.

Good luck to you Mama and it will be okay.

My story is very similar to Carrie's. I had stage 3 dysplaysia and had a cone biospy about 6 years ago. I too didn't go for regular paps for a few years, so everyone, please do go every year. I had to have paps every 3 months for a couple years then went to every 6 months then every year. I haven't had an abnormal one since. The doc did say there was a very small chance that I wouldn't get pg, but we did. During my pregnancy, I had to have ultrasounds every month til 27 weeks to make sure my cervix was still strong. I had no problems but I do wonder if the scar tissue might have helped lead to my c-section.

I get so happy when I get normal pap results now. If fact I just got my normal results in the mail and it's hanging on the fridge right now.

they told me i had hpv too

i was suprised as no one ever told me that before and there is no way i just now caught it, i have had to have that for years and years. odd it just now shows up?

i was kind of hoping for hysterectomy if i have any displasia, because i do not like the idea of worrying about it endlessly each year .....

to me if i might get cancer there,,,,id rather have it removed...but i have a feeling it doesn't work that way, and i'll be just having things frozen like you guys said,

i am glad you all sound like you are doing fine and are healthy!!!!!

thanks for making me more at ease

sorry about my poor spelling, but my toddler is up and i can't have time to edit it!

ps.
i am taking vitamins that are "suppose" to reverse the bad paps......i dont have the list in front of me, but it includes grape seed extract, vit A, Selenium......and a bunch of other stuff, i'll try to post the list later, maybe help you guys too...found out from an atkins book that it might work to reverse problem.

They told me HPV can come and go (symptoms that is, if you have the virus you have the virus), sometimes one partner will stimulate cervical changes where another one didn't. They don't know why. All weird. One Dr. told me I might have it becuase I got warts on my thumb, another told me that was bunk. Some call it an STD, some don't. I don't think they really know very much quite frankly.

Incidentally the standard in the UK for frequency of paps is every 3 years, not every year. Keep in mind that where practitioners get paid by the test, tests are recommended more often.

My bad pap referred me to the colposcopy clinic and the absolute worst experience of my life, bar none. (I'm mostly over it, mind you, just some bitter still). I didn't have another for 10 years (no pelvic of any kind actually), I went through phobia counselling and then finally hypnotherapy allowed me to have my MW do one for me with this jsut finished pregnancy. Came out completely normal.

Anyway this probably doesn't help so much but anyway, there it is. I guess all I really want to say is don't let them scare you, and if they tell you something that doesn't sound right, challenge them. hang in there hon.

I was 23 when the nuse from PP called with my class 3 pap results, on a Friday night. There was no doctor available to talk to me, so I spent the weekend preparing to die... I did go in to have my biopsy there, but it was so degrading and painful, I found an OB/GYN. He was absolutely wonderful!
When he did my colposcopy, he made jokes about my partner thinking I smell like a salad that night
He also strongly recommended laser surgery over the cryo procedure ~ why kill healthy tissue when he can limit the cervical damage to the hpv warts? It made sense to me and now I recommend that procedure to others. I came back every three months and at my one year check up, I had displasia again!! This time I had no insurance! The same OB did my laser surgery for around $400 (compared to the $1200 for the first time!).
I'm now 35 and have never had a recurrance. Not even when I expected to, like during pregnancy and times of stress! It's certainly NOT the death sentence the establishment seems to make it out to be (doesn't that stress just make you more suseptible?!?!)

I had always had an abnormal pap because I used diaphragms for birth control during my reproductive life. I developed an allergy to rubber and my cervix was always irritiated.

I may also have been sensitive to the spermicidal jellies/creams.

The doctors recommended a "sno-cone" surgery, but I just went for the pap.

It has always been class 2 when using the diaphragm. I refused to use the pill, or IUD or anything else.

Now that I am menopausal, my paps are fine.

Go figure. I refused the treatment/biopsy and I am fine.

I have had only one sexual partner in my life, so I am low risk for this kind of cancer.

What type of pap test is offered?(The smear on a slide or the newer on that is put in a liquid?)
I have had many ASCUS paps and was on the wait and see protocal. I recently read about the Pap net and Thinpap pap smear tests that give a more accurate results .I asked my doctor and he recently started using the Thinpap . My last pap came back normal I will still get ThinPap every 4 months to be sure ..Do some research on the net and talk to your doctor about these new test kits available...
