I really can't stand taking my vitamins. I have a hard time swallowing pills and have to cut them into quarter sections just to get them down. I tried crushing them and putting them in various things but that was just

Thanks for the reminder! I have trouble remembering my evening dose!

I have a small esophagus or something. My prenatals are smaller than most prenatals I've seen, but I still have an awful time getting them down! My nausea finally subsided, but here I am, still gagging over the pills! Ick!

Same here. To quote her: "The first trimester is all about survival. If it makes you feel sick, stop doing it." She also explained that the vitamins were more for me than the baby, in that my body will take whatever it needs to keep the baby healthy. It's all about sacrificing the host! (just kidding... kinda)

I'm suppose to take two prenatals three times a day. I usually only get in two prenatals. I'm just so worried that they are just making me more sick then I already am. It would be so much easier if I only had to take one a day. I'm actually going to ask my midwife today if she could recommend a one dose prescription for them. I'm also taking flax seed, B6, and an extra calcium supplement as well. I usually take those first thing in the morning.

I highly advise shopping around and trying different prenatals. I have one that is in a capsule - MUCH easier to swallow. I need to take 6 a day (two with every meal), but I find that taking them spread out helps with the nausea factor, and the capsules are much easier to swallow (smaller and smoother than the "horse pills") and don't have any foul taste. Mine are from the whole foods store, and they have a bunch of "extra" ginger, B vitamins, etc and I love them - but it took trying 6 different prenatals last pg to find one I liked.

My prenatals are from Whole Foods as well and I have to take 6 a day. They also include ginger, red raspberry leaf and a bunch of other stuff. The brand is Country Life "Maxi Pre-Natal" (180 Vegetarian Capsules). Of course for me taking six capsules a day isn't working out so I'd rather take one big horse pill. Once these are gone I'm trying out the sample prescription pills my midwife gave me!

Yup, those are the ones I'm taking
. They make me soooooo much less sick than anything else I tried. Some days I don't get all six taken, but I figure 2 or 4 is at least a little in the right direction. They are also quite low iron (I found higher iron ones were bad for both nausea and constipation).

Hi!

I am not sure how necessary prenatals really are if we have healthy habits and diets, and during my last pregnancy regular prenatals made me so sick I had to stop. But this time I tried the SISU Multi-expecting from the health food store and they are fine for now. They are also vegetarian and contain ginger. I live in Canada and I am not sure if this product is also available in the States.

So I haven't had my prenatals in a few days and I feel SO MUCH better!! I was incredibly constipated and bloated that I was miserable (err, more so) all day long.

For those of you not taking prenatals or doing so sporadically, do you try to eat stuff with folic acid? Or just not worry too much about it. I wish I could say I was eating well right now, but I'm not eating too heck of a lot. Maybe I should pick up some Total or something?

I always feel better if I start craving cereal because then I know I'm getting more vitamins in my diet. Maybe you could also buy some granola bars with vitamins in it. I bought some the other day at Whole Foods that had 50% folic acid in it. Or you could just take a folic acid supplement.

I am taking the Rainbow Light prenatals, which are 3x/day, and are big, but the good thing is that I have not had any nausea or constipation with them, and they have no yucky smell that even regular vits have, which for me, is a huge part of the gag factor. One nurse I used to work with always told patients who gagged easily to make sure to put the pills on the tip of the tongue, as it is a more reflexive place for your tongue to get them back to your throat (versus putting them way back on the tongue, thinking they are closer to the throat). I have found this extremely helpful advice! Also, I do better if I swallow the vits with OJ or milk. Dairy seems for a smoother ride. Hope you get some relief! Oh, and the Rainbow LIght has a one a day prenatal, too. Good luck! michelle
