Anyone else in California MAD AS HELL about the liscensing tax?

It is for THIS REASON ALONE I am voting Republican in the coming election. Yes, me, the liberal hooligan.

Gray Davis is a crook and a fraud. Not that all politicians aren't, but I am sick and tired of having our taxes hiked to pay for democratic mismanagement in this state. My comments, by the way, are germane to California. I don't think all democrats do this. I think Davis is a greedy little gremlin with cahones that need to be put right in check.

ANYONE would be better than him.

Paying this liscense fee is something that can KILL me in one move. It's excessive and greedy. It hurts those of us who need our cars to work and who have to work to make money.

Down with Davis!!!

one of the last thing pete wilson did in 98 was roll back car taxes 2/3..it was his law..but it was with the caveat that if the state coffers got low ...in the red...then the trigger would go off and it would roll back to the full figure again..3 x. of course in 98 the enonmy was great....of course even then jandiced prognosticators knew schools would take the hit. they were right.

we have been in the red for awhile. the trigger went off. people are misguided in thinking this is davis tax. for some people who are smart enough to know the difference some take issue with davis letting the trigger happen. reminds me of prop 13 in the 70's....we're still paying for that one.

anyway the law was pete's and it was his caveat.

All this time I had heard that it was so expensive living in CA, and I know it is, but I freaked out when I heard that the annual property taxes for a multi-million dollar home next to the ocean aren't much higher than mine for a $90,000 house in Texas! Maybe someone needs to take a look at how property taxes in your state are structured? Maybe CA needs someone from out-of-state to come in and give them a new perspective.

BTW, we pay a fee for our vehicles also. Some places call it an ad valorum tax, and it is based on the value of our cars and trucks. We also pay higher sales taxes (8.25% where I live) than many states, and our school (property) taxes are about to go up and they are considering creating a hospital district and tax to make up for the money the federal govt. doesn't give us for medical anymore.

CA is only one of 47 states with budget problems. I know they had the worst deficit, but ENRON can be credited for about $9 billion of that.

Be careful. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

for a half million dollar home is only about 5,000 or one percent of value. That's cheap by Texas standards, but we don't have a state income tax. $5350 in taxes is for about a $200,000 - $225,000 home here.

In my county, we pay over $2.66 per $100 valuation (2.66% of value) according to year 2000, which includes city and county and school district. We get a small exemption of the value for homestead, but I still paid over $2300 in property taxes last year for a house that is worth about 90,000.

The comparison of property tax rates has nothing to do with Prop 13, it's for the adjusted rate.

Frankly, I wonder how any "regular" people manage to buy property in CA. I would think it takes two incomes or partnerships.

Because doll. as much as his arguments in the debate were GREAT, and I mean he really seemed like the best guy out there!!! A vote for him is a vote forr the democrats - we all know how the dynamic works. You have to go lesser of two evils.

And I am still mad as hell about the car liscense tax and want Davis out for that. He is governor - it is HIS JOB to find creative ways to either cut spending or raise more money wihtout hurting the working classes with exhorbitant tazes. I want him out.

Why not tax the Inidan Gamers who make billions and PAY NO TAX???????

Why not make the tax for the rich the same as for the working class like the green guy said?

oatmeal, I'm curious, if a rep gov signed the law into being, why would you think another rep would be the answer ??

I'm in IL. Another state deep in the red.........we've been slashing services and raising taxes for 3 yrs now. First under Rep gov now under Dem (first one in 25 yrs). NIETHER party is really willing to cut gov't bloat first............

I am glad I'm not in Cali though...............how embarrassing.

Because, I am sick and tired of the democrats running this state in the red.

I am mad as hell about the liscensing tax - next year - if it hasn't been dealt with - it will cost me $600 to liscense my vehicle.

a friend of mine sent a bunch of us an email. I thought there was some food for thought.

If you intend to vote yes. Please stay home and watch TV instead. Or better: ask the women you know if they have ever been grabbed or harassed in the work place. Or even better read up on Hitler's "speaking skills" (which Arnold admires) and the results thereof. Or better go to google and search for Arnold's meeting with Ken Lay at the height of the California energy crisis. Or better still find a Republican who was for Clinton's impeachment and see if they are willing to go after Arnold for sexual battery.

Or write Bush and tell him deficits are a huge problem in California and see he he has any thoughts on this issue. Or just see if he has any thoughts at all.

i'm not thrilled with many things in california. But above all I'm not pleased with an 8 week election. I'd rather wait and fight it out at the next gubernatorial election..the real one.

I think I started a thread on that. It's the article by Greg Palast with the memos from ENRON. I can't remember. Maybe it was somewhere else...

If I don't see it here, I'll start one...

On Edit: $600 licensing is a huge amount. But I think they have big car fees in Virginia, also, don't they? I recall some friends in the military claiming their CA homestead to avoid a high tax like that when they were stationed in VA.

That's nothing. Try owning a home in NH. :LOL We bought our house for $129,900 and we pay almost $4000 a year in taxes. It's crazy.

I bought a new car this year and I think it was around $300 to put it on the road. Yet NH's motto is, "Live free or die."

VA has property tax on cars and it is rather steep. They also charge a seperate, quite low fee to register the car. CA does not charge property tax on cars but the fee to register is based on the current value of the car. Several years ago when I lived in VA (after buying a vehicle in CA and driving it there!) the difference was significant. I never gave up my CA plates!

Sorry - still want Davis out and still want the liscense tax repealed and am still mad as hell about it. I don't care who Arnie grabbed. I know that's unfeminist of me, but I believe he was doing that stuff back in the early 80's before he got married and all the people jumping on the bandwagon after that are just jumping on the bandwagon with frivolous claims. I also believe that Bush the coke monkey had his mits on a few asses himself and he's President. My hero, Martin Luther King, has been documented as a womanizer.

I want the liscense tax brought back down. I don't care who has to be in there to do it. I want it taken down!!!!

you sound very angry about this car tax. however all states are in the red...someone had to pay for the war in Iraq....you'll be even angrier when arnold wins and public funding is cut.....please consider voting Green or anyone but arnold.. your children will thank you.

I woke up this morning thinking, "Who in the world would vote for this idiot?" Then I read this thread. Ouch. Now I get it. Saving a few hundred bucks on an auto registration renewal is worth selling out the entire state? I'd say, "Just wait, you'll get yours", but unfortunately, we'll all get it along with you. Thanks!

Not too many people looked at what Arnie had going on in his platform - which I understand. It's hard to take a movie star seriously. But I put him next to Davis and all I saw was a new chance for something different standing next to an old mean crook who would never change anything.

And no it was not about "saving a few hundred bucks" it was about the difference between being able to drive and make a living for my family as the sole breadwinner - or not, period. I would not have been able to drive next year with that tax. It was just a piddlly little savings.

I am glad Arnold won and I am looking forward to seeing if he will fail or succeed.
