Anyone else new to CD or BTDT?

892 Views 25 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Miss Juice
I have been so bad lately
I am starting to get a stash going and keep on spending money... DH keep on telling me, "I thought you were going to make the diapers" and I said "I am, but I have to see what real ones look like first." I think I have bought about 18 or so, so far... I still plan on making some though. I really want to buy a bunch of kissaluvs, since I have only heard good things about them, but I am getting a lot of everything else so I can try all of them.

What does everyone else have, either new to CD or been there and done that? I really want to have at least one more so I need to get quite a few so that they done get worn out with this one...

I would recommend the Honey Boy! diaper pattern. I made tons of diapers with this pattern, it's really versatile. You can make fitted, AIO's pocket diapers, contours, velcro or pinned variety, you can really play with the pattern to fit your needs.

I'm a BTDT mama! We used chinese prefolds, snappied, with either plain old cheapo nylon covers over them (like these but cheaper!) or nice wool covers that my mom has knitted. For nighttime we used Wonderoos (well worth the money!) with a homemade wool cover. Never any leaks and she potty-learned at 20 months!

Oh, man! I don't want to admit how much $ I've spent (so I won't
). But everything with the exception of the Little Beetles (bought used), and some of the soakers (knit by me from the WHW pattern) was purchased new
:. But I have to say, that even after doing my spreadsheet on sposies vs cd costs, the way I've done it is still cheaper than sposies.

I went the basic route, and didn't go too fancy (I would *really* love some of the embroidered fluff that's out there, but even I had to admit it was time to reign in the pocketbook
).

I may have gotten more than I need, but I didn't want to find out that one style works, and another just doesn't for my babe, and then have to wait 3-6 weeks for more of what I like (unless I want to pay international express shipping). I also figured I could always ship stuff back to my mom in the U.S. when I'm done with it (or if I never used it), and have her resell it for me.

Anyway...I really wanted to try a pocket system, but also fitteds, cpfs and covers, so this is what I now have in my newborn/infant stash:

My toddler is in fuzzi buns at the moment so i have a stash of stuffies and motherease wraps for the new babe. I think he might just go in terrys for the first few weeks until he fits the stuffies. I might have to buy a few cute newborn nappies but the council round here gives you a mini stash of nappies when your babe is a couple of weeks old. I don't really want to spend alot on newborn nappies as ds was 15lb by 6 weeks and i expect no:2 to grow that fast too.
i've got 2 dozen flats, 6 pockets, one SOS (suzie one size), one doodlebottoms hemp contour, and one kissaluvs contour for my 13month old.

I've started thinking about my stash for Cayden and i really think i want to do fitteds + covers and fb's
I'm completely new to it.

I ordered 2 fuzzi bunz with hemp inserts through the internet, just those 2 things alone with shipping cost 45 dollars. sheesh.

Then I found some stores across town that actually sell cloth diapers live and in person, so we went yesterday and checked it out.

Now we also have 2 bumpkins covers and a set of white cotton/terrycloth shaped insert thingies. I don't know what they're called.

I'm trying to launder them all now, but my High Efficiency washer and dryer thinks it's so smart and isn't really doing a good job. I'll certainly have to get that all figured out before my little prince arrives on the scene.

I"m a btdt mom too.

I have MEOS for when the baby will be over 8-10lbs with all the covers i need until he/she will p/ted. I also have 24 premium prefolds.

I am buying 36 used infant prefolds and 14 used fitted dipes. I'm hoping to used this from the start with this child.

What kind of HE washer do you have? I have a high efficiency too and have no problem getting my diapers clean and perfect! I would recommend using a sanitary cycle and the smallest amount of detergent possible. The diapers soak it up and it takes forever to get out excess soap. I use regular Tide Free Powder (not HE detergent) and only about 2 T. Any more than that I have tons of suds and the washer gets funky on me
:

I agree though about wool covers, they are fantastic

These will be my 3rd and 4th to CD. I have a bunch of fitted (mostly kissaluvs at the moment) with reg covers and wool covers. I also have some aios and fuzzibunz. Since I am gonna have 2 newborns, I am sure I need more, but I do usually wash diapers everynight.
I am new to CDing as well. After reading the diaper boards, I just ordered 3 dozen infant indian prefolds and 2 aristocrat wool covers. The wool sounds great but I just about fell over when I saw the price of them. I can knit, so if anyone has any links to wool cover patterns I would be so gratefull! I know I will need more covers but other than wool I have not decided what others appeal to me.

I considered Cding my DS and bought a dozen AIOs. I gave up quickly because I was too shy to make a decent investment in the dipes (didn't know what I wanted) and had to launder every day. That and the AIOs took FOREVER to dry in the drier. I continued using cloth wipes, so I know that this time if I research more and buy more dipes I will probably stick with it. After diapering with disposibles and forking out 38$ for every box, I am more open to the idea of investing more $$$ initially.
I decided to start CDing when I realized that it would cost over $70 a month to diaper both my babes in sposies (dd is 15 months right now). A friend suggested that I start CDing dd#1 so I could get used to it, so mostly I've been focusing on gathering things for her. We're using contoured dipes and covers, or prefolds folded in thirds and covers. So far, so good!

I have some patterns on the way and plan to make most of my stash for the new baby, but I've been shopping ebay too.

Whirlpool Duet, and there's an "extra rinse" option but no sanitary cycle.

The doublers and prefold thingies are taking a CENTURY in the dryer. I think they've been in over an hour now on high, I only have 8 of them, and they're still not done.

I had to take it off the automatic moisture sensing cycle, as it was shutting them off when they weren't even close to being dry.

With the front load washer I have, I don't know how I'll pre-soak either . . .

I had this problem when I was just getting started - it turns out that it takes a lot longer to dry 8 prefolds than it does to dry a full load. When I was only drying a few at a time, it never got done. Once I had enough dipes to make a full (or fuller) load, things were much better, and now pretty much everything - prefolds, doublers, quick-dry AIOs - gets bone dry in one cycle. Internal soaker AIO's are usually still a little damp, so I hang them for a while, but I don't usually need them right away.

Just don't let the drying time get you down! I almost gave up in the beginning, I was so frustrated.
Maxine - I also have a Duet. For my dipes I usually do a long cold wash (no detergent) with an extra rinse just to get all the poopies rinsed out to the sewer. Then I do a long ("More") "Whitest Whites" wash with a small amount of detergent. If my Joey Bunz get stinky then I'll leave those in and do a warm wash with a splash of bleach. (Yes, I admit it, I sometimes use bleach on my inserts!
)

You definitely wouldn't need to do all those steps with new dipes or with an exclusively breastfed babe. I have stinky toddler poop to deal with so that needs a bit more attention. I dodn't have a problem with my hemp inserts stinking until DS was a toddler, either.

These two will be our 2nd and 3rd to CD. With Hannah I overbought and only ended up using Kissaluvs for the 1st 6 months (even though I had tons of prefolds, I got so spoiled using the Kissaluvs!). After that we used Sammy's One-Size fitteds, Little Beetles OCV fitteds, Tots Bots fitteds, Fuzzibunz, and Happy Heinys. Right now, for her I reach for Fuzzibunz first and Happy Heinys second. Have stashed away the fitteds for awhile to simplify washing/drying. I'll be adding 24-36 more Kissaluvs to my stash, though, and then see from there what else I'll need after the kiddos outgrow those. I'm optimistic that Hannah will be out of dipes by the time they need her mediums...a girl can dream, right???? =)
LadyBug, thanks for the specifics on how to use this washer!
I really appreciate that.

You too, Miss Juice. I think yours is a good message for OP too: don't give up.

I am somewhere in between new to this and BTDT - I've been using CDs on my 2nd DD for almost a year, but I've never used CD with a newborn. I haven't itemized my newborn stash yet, since DDs room is in a state of perpetual chaos, but I know I have 36 infant prefolds, probably 8-10 fitted dipes of various makes, and a variety of PUL and fleece covers. I'm planning to knit some soakers or shorts one day (but I seem to be running out of days). It's strange, since I've never done cloth with a newborn, but I'm not planning to use the same sort of things I use for my older daughter. DD uses lots of pockets and AIOs (esp. at daycare) and some prefolds at home - we have a few fitteds that simply NEVER get used. But with the babe, I'm planning to use fitteds, prefolds, and wool almost exclusively. Maybe it has to do with the fact that DD currently goes through about 4 changes of clothes per day, and wool is more than we can handle.
We're planning to do very low budget CDing. DH and I are making flats and prefolds using these patterns and we recently made a trip to the used clothing store and found some cheap, soft lambswool sweaters to make covers.

We'll probably use disposables for the first few days, though, since my understanding is that meconium is very difficult to get out of diapers. (Actually, if it weren't for the cost issue, we would probably go disposable all the way. We have a city-wide industrial composting program where I live. They collect all sorts of organic and semi-organic waste, including disposable diapers, so disposables work out to be the better choice environmentally.)
I am so freakin addicted to buying diaper stuff!!!!!!!!!
