ps. does anyone else find the u/s pics kinda weird/creepy? Not that I would say so to a proud mama showing hers off, but sometimes my first reaction is more "eww, weird!" than "oh how cute!"

I have not had one, and don't plan on it, unless medical need arises. I didn't have one with my first pregnancy, either. I have had doppler, however.

I'm pretty comfortable with our decision, and have never really fully understood the need to see (if I had this need, I would act on it, though. I think u/s are probably overdone, but I am skeptical that they are as harmful as some think. I would personally prefer more evidence that they are safe before having one, however).

It is funny how shocked strangers get if you mention not having had one. I just think this is odd, considering how relatively new they are.

I had one because we weren't able to find a heartbeat even after 12 weeks. My husband and I were going thru a hard time otherwise and it was just too much stress to worry about whether the baby was dead or not. So, I had one, but only to confirm viability. No tests were done. We did not have a 20 week one and we will not be having any other ones either! I think it was the right decision at the time and circumstance, but I wish in retrospect I had trusted my body more.

I think the 3D ultrasound pics are creepy as h*ll. I don't think I'd ever want images of my child like that! The normal ones I am okay with. The 3D ones make them look like they are covered with lava or something!

Don't worry, gals.... I've had more than enough ultrasounds to cover all of us and then some.
Oh the joy of having a huge ovarian cyst half the size of your baby....

I haven't. This is my 4th pregnancy and I've never had one, in fact.

(I agree that the images are creepy, too. It seems like a violation of the baby's privacy, although that's not the only reason I don't have them.)

I didn't have one with my last pregnancy but this time I felt like i needed to see the baby for some reason. This pregnancy was unplanned and I don't think it was real enough for me, but the u/s helped it sink in

The baby didn't like it though so I felt bad. The baby doesn't like the doppler either, but my midwife is not very good with the fetoscope it seems.

nope, not me- much to the shock and horror of everyone who asks me. ( and i don't even mention the fact that its another "risky" vbac.
)

i really struggled with this one this time- its my third pregnancy but the first time i have not had an ultrasound. i just keep telling myself that no generation before my own had routine ultrasounds (in fact my mom told me they were unheard of in the 70's unless they suspected twins or some sort of medical emergency) and we all turned out fine.

I'm not getting any either. I do feel comfortable with the doppler. (Although we use the fetoscope now that I am farther along.)

My DH is 38 years old so his mother didn't have any with him or his brother, so it seemed really natural for him to skip it.

Okay, so the day that I post this, I end up seeing a perinatologist for signs of preterm labor and have my first ultrasound. Yikes.

Things may be okay, I have another appt tomorrow AM- just had to post, since just this morning I had so confidently said- oh no, not me, I won't be having an ultrasound.

I am not having one with thisbaby. I had them with my first two, but haven't for the last three. I have used a doppler, but I'm going to ask the midwife to use a fetoscope next time, since I'm this far along..

Haven't had one, won't get one unless a particular need arises...

This is my first pg without any at all, and I'm really happy about that. DD1 was conceived shortly after a m/c, so I felt like I needed to have a confirmed heartbeat. With DD2, I had some early bleeding, and also wanted to confirm a heartbeat. Both were early scans, so I've never known the sex of any of my babies before birth.

not having one unless a real medical need arises. don't use doppler either - I'm happy to trust my body/the process until the fetoscope/pinard can be used. For dd we used doppler in labour only and that was fine with me (long labour, couldn't lie still for the pinard) so I'm open to that this time around as well. . .but we'll see

I wasn't planning on having one, but then when I looked into the law on home VBACs with a licensed midwife in Utah, I found it was required in statute! It irks me that the state mandated an ultrasound that I didn't want, but of course that I will have to pay for. All to visualize the placental implantation. For some VBAC mamas, I could see that being important, but in my case, the c-section was done at 8 cm. My scar is very low and tiny because of that and from listening and palpating, it was obvious that my placenta was nowhere near the incision site (which was verified by the u/s). Sorry to vent, it just gets me steamed.
