Hi everyone I am just wondering if any of you have ever tried to make circumsision illegal. I am thinking that the best route to go would be to try to make it illegal in my own state first. Would I call my state representative? Would I start a petition? What do I need to do?

It will be hard to make it illegal in the US, because it is so commonly practiced. What you CAN do though, is work on making sure medicaid and other health insurace policies do not cover infant circ. This is a huge help to reducing the rate of circ.<br><br><a href="http://www.icgi.org/Medicaid_Project/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.icgi.org/Medicaid_Project/index.htm</a><br><a href="http://www.themenscenter.com/intact/2001/GIAWsummary.htm" target="_blank">http://www.themenscenter.com/intact/...IAWsummary.htm</a><br><a href="http://www.cirp.org/news/themissoulian12-21-02/" target="_blank">http://www.cirp.org/news/themissoulian12-21-02/</a><br><a href="http://www.cirp.org/news/charlotteobserver09-21-02/" target="_blank">http://www.cirp.org/news/charlotteobserver09-21-02/</a>

The circumcision of girls is illegal, as of 1996 I believe. There is work going on right now for that bill to be expanded to cover boys as well.

All these links are about Medicaid. What about private insurance?<br><br>
I remeber a thread a little while back when someone was upset that their insureance covered RIC and not having skin tags removed. When she wrote them they missed the point of her letter.<br><br>
We should do a big letter writing campaign to our insurance companies about how much money they could save. Insurance companies love <span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="color:#008000;"><b>$$$$</b></span></span>

I have written bc/bs several times. They are the underwriters ? of our state medicaid. Maybe if we had loys more people writing the same company it would be more effective...

My step brother and his wife live in Japan with their two kids. His wife is Japanese. They have told me that circumcision is illegal in Japan. My nephew is intact.<br><br>
I think it would be pretty difficult to make ilegal in the US.

If you want to get technical it already is illegal (equal rights for girls and boys and all that...) but I don't think I will see it being illegal in my lifetime. That doesn't mean that I won't try my hardest to make it so.

It's not illegal in Japan. My nephews were both born there and are both circed.

Actually, there is no Equal Rights Amendment that specifically includes sex, so there would be no basis for it being illegal for boys and girls. The ERA has yet to be introduced again, it didn't pass ratification in the states in the '80's.<br><br>
It will be a long time before that is a politically viable option. There would have to be strong support for it throughout the US, much more than 50%. Also, since politics is dominated by men who have largely been circ'ed, there is no way that they would speak out against it.<br><br>
The best thing to do is a ground up movement to normalize leaving all children intact, then that generation who has been left whole will eventually come to power and possibly change the system. The key is going to be generational replacement before the actual law changes.

Were they born in an American hospital or military hospital? I'm quite sure that it is illegal in any Japanese hospital...
