Anyone have a doctor you like in Metrowest?

3451 Views 22 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  DaughterOfKali
I'm looking for a new doctor for me, somewhere around Natick, Framingham, wellesley, etc. Until now, I've been with Julie Elgas at the Marino Center in Wellesley, but I just can't stand dealing with that office. I liked the idea of a doctor who would be open to alternative medicine, but I think it's more important to be abe to contact her.
Any suggestions? TIA!

I'm searching too so I'll watch this thread.
Another interested party!

I see and don't recommend paula jo Carbone. Couldn't get a sick appt for 4 days when I had fifths disease (and ended up self diagnosing after my kids got the label from their pedi), couldn't get a sick appt for mastitis, could get an emergency visit for mastitis ("call me back on monday") and ended up in the emergency room on IV antibiotics and am currently fighting a breast abscess because of the delay.
Funny, because I see PaulaJo Carbone and I have always been seen within an hour or two of my call, though once I had to wait until the next day. She prescribed anti-biotics for mastitis but also encouraged natural solutions and prevention. She's been quick to give referrals when needed (dermatology, podiatry, PT) and eager to educate how to take care of oneself as well. Plus she is very supportive of a veg diet, and she's got a mellow personality which I prefer.
It's always interesting how 2 people's experiences can be so different. A lot of chance/luck (or lack of) involved I suppose.
Bump. - Nobody? Really? Not even a bit further out? I hate just picking a doctor and hoping. There must be someone out there that's good.

Let's choose the same one and then compare notes.

I only wrote a negative comment b/c I knew veganf would write a positive one on her and I wanted balance. We've been over this issue before and can agree to disagree.

DP really likes Jay Krasner but knows I won't because "he can't look anyone in the eye." I have issues with their office because dp was tested for lyme and the office then closed for two weeks. Meanwhile her "very positive" results are just sitting someplace while she's quite ill (and dd is quite ill with misdiagnosed lyme and the twins are two weeks old!)

I'm probably not alone in wishing that the pedi I love for my kids would see me also!

LOL, of course.
So who do your kids see who you like so much?

The OP is looking for a doc for herself, isn't she?
I don't know if this is too much out of your range, but I see Laura Garelick at Family Practice Associates in Medfield. I've never had trouble getting a sick appt and I feel like she's pretty attentive to women's health issues. I don't tend to need to see a dr very often, but I really like her. The other drs in the practice (2) also seem to be good. Just my opinion, though. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
Finally back with electricity after a long cold weekend without! I love my dr - Marina Estrin of Metrowest Medical Group (Metrowest Internal Medicine) in Framingham (near the hospital). Don't know how she is with alternative med but she is very attentive, calls back asap (I've received calls from her at 9pm). Very assertive - was excellent in getting a csyt diagnosed - boom, boom, boom - scheduled all the necessary tests within a day and had a surgery scheduled within hours of diagnoses. Another example - when I called her months ago with another suspected cyst, she wanted me in for an u/s the next day. Her office is extremely busy and I don't know if she is taking any new patients but she is very proficient and assertive - actually to the point where it kind of bugs my OB/GYN! She speaks Russian. PM me with any other questions.

Sounds like who my husband sees -- Irina Bogorad (in PaulaJo Carbone's office), also Russian, very assertive, but he likes her no nonsense attitude. (Nothing against Russians, I'm 1/2 Russian too!)

We see Dr Krasner. He was referred to us a by a good, super-educated friend who was a pharma rep and had metrowest as her region. She could never say enough good things about him and just felt like he really cares about his patients and is really smart. She was on conference calls with him and went to meetings, etc, as well, so I do trust her opinion - and my experiences have been great.

Sure, he has trouble looking you in the eye. : ) I used to think that was strange, but I can get over it based on the level of care I've rec'd from him and his office.

I saw Irina Bogorad once. She almost fell over when she took my temp (I was sick!) and then almost fell over again when I said I had been taking a homeopathic flu treatment. She kept saying "How do you know about that? How do you know about that?" like I'd broken into some sort of NASA secret info! I'd have laughed but I thought I was dying.

My kids go to Millbrook. Husband and wife team who are okay. They used to have another great guy but he left. Dana Frier (I'm sure I spelt that wrong.) is the person to see there. Has two young kids herself, good bedside manner. Seems to know her stuff but if honest when she doesn't. The husband/wife duo are pretty pro vax but let me do what I want with out question. Never any problems regarding circ issues, etc. Over all I find them to be respectful and thoughtful. I feel really comfortable asking "silly" questions or bringing up "silly" concerns with her. I wouldn't travel far for them but they are working for us as a healthy family.

I've been thinking of switching to this office-- would you be willing to share what your difficulties have been? It's quite a drive for me and I'd hate to make the switch if it's going to be troublesome. Thank you!!

Its very difficult to reach the doctors. Whether they're good or progressive or open minded or not doesn't matter, because they can't be reached. I've found the receptionists to be unpleasent. They seem like you're inconveniencin them terribly by asking them to do their job (thing like connecting you to your doctor, signing you into the office, directing you where to go..) They're probably overworked, I guess, or otherwise unhappy with their job, but I don't like dealing with them.
Once you get past the receptionist, your call is directed to the doctor's assistant's voicemail box. This assistant calls back sometimes the same day, sometimes the next day, and isn't familiar with whatever you're calling about, so, depending on the situation, she either checks with the doctor, and gets back to you, or just takes your word for it, and prescribes whatever you say you need.
DH sees a doctor at the same office, and though we haven't actually seen the doctors much, we haven't found them to be that much more progressive than other doctors. They don't seem any more likely than average to listen to your concerns like you're an intelligent person who should be involved in your own health care decisions. They do push exercise, nutrition and vitamines more than other doctors I've met.
The one time I went in for a sick visit, a problem with my eye, the doctor I saw (not my pcp) misdiagnosed it as pink eye, and gave me some ointment, which made the problem seem a bit better. A few weeks later I went for a new perscription on my glasses and the optometrist diagnosed a much more serious problem, which she then treated.
I'm just overall disappointed. Their website looks so good. My mom tried the cambridge center and was also not impressed enough to make the trip worth her while.
Hope that helps.

I used to use the Marino Center in Cambridge when we lived there, and it was also as you described--good doctors, but the office staff made you feel like you were interrupting them by existing.

After not being able to get through to the answering service to ds's pediatrician yesterday, I'm finally calling today to get another doc. Makes me sad because I like his actual pediatrician. It's just that it's becoming very difficult to get an appt and to actually get through to the darn office/service.

I'll be switching my doc to the same building at the same time.
