Anyone have plans for MLK Jr's birthday?

I usually try to use the day off as a day of service, which I began in college. It was fun, and interesting, as well as a learning experience to go and serve in Central, PA, especially since I am from a big City.

When I was a kid, I remember going all over the city with my mom, my sister, and my brother to visit Synagogues, Mosques, and Masses to take part in different services and activities. This may be why I get so excited about MLK day. My mom made it so educational and fun.

What are your plans this year?

Oh, and do you have the day off?

I was just reminiscing about when I lived in Philly and every MLK day, I'd go to the synagogue with good friends for an intercultural/interfaith celebration. I miss that so much. Unfortunately, I have to take my car to be serviced on Monday so I'll be grounded and unable to get to any celebrations

Central City PA? That's close to where my Grandmother lived!

I took the day off because the kids have off school (and for some reason I just don't feel I can leave them home alone to run amok...). I work for a volunteer organization. We do a ton for Make A Difference day (in October) as well as MLK day... so we have lots of choices available and I am lucky to be familiar with the opportunities here. I plan to take the kids over to the barn where we usually volunteer.

Do you still live near Philly? My mom used to take us to the interfaith celebrations/ unity opportunities/ services too. I don't know what they were called, but even as a kid, I found them inspirational. I am sure that they will be inspirational for different reasons now, but as a kid, I loved the sense of peace that was always present, and I loved the sense of "togetherness" with everyone. MLK day services have always made me think of unity. I am so excited about celebrating with DS.

Near PSU's main campus... near Bellefonte, PA and all those places.

I have the day off, but I have been so busy lately, that I forgot to plan for this year. I am hunting for baby/toddler friendly volunteer opportunities. I am so excited.

I voted that I haven't decided. I'm a SAHM, so I have the day "off". Dd will be home from kindergarten and ds will be home from preschool. I thought we'd stay home and I'd talk about Dr. King, and discuss who he was and what he did, and why it was so important. Now you have me thinking about doing something more service oriented, though. Might not be so easy with a 3 and 5 year old. Dh doesn't have the day off.

Hi Doodlebugsmom:

Sounds like you guys are going to have fun. That sounds nice. I am trying to figure out what I can handle with DH not having the day off too, but I am going to figure it out by the end of Sunday, that is my goal.

I am working and later that night attending a 'psychic reading' by one of my friends MIL (to be). I always think about my mom around MLK Day as it was her favorite holiday of all. But I don't do anything specifically to honor him.

It's a special anniversary for dh and I....dd was conceived on MLK Jr. Day 10 years ago. So I voted other, as we might feel the need to reenact that special day.

Actually, dh and dd both have the day off, and I really like the idea of volunteering! Perhaps I will look into finding somewhere we could do that.

Hi Alicia622:

What did you mom like to do for MLK day?

A lot of people just like to be with other people for MLK day to maintain a sense of unity... sounds like you are doing that.

I chose other. We plan to march downtown in the MLK memorial march.

We started our MLK birthday celebration early, though. Dd and I made a cake on Wednesday, and she decided it was MLK's birthday cake. She even insisted we sing happy birthday to him

I hope to also use the day as a reminder to finally send in a donation to the NAACP. Been meaning to do that all month.

Oh, so cool... I look forward to DS getting old enough to do stuff like that with me. So far, he does like to help add stuff to food that I am prepping, and he looks so proud. That sounds nice.

I don't personally have plans, but there's a MLK day event for kids that my oldest son is going to attend-- so my plan is to drive him there and pick him up.

Honestly, MLK day is always "take the kids to the dentist" day because the kids and I have the day off, but the dentist's office is open.

DH works for the federal government and plans on going skiing as he has the Monday holiday off.

Ds and I will do what we do most days: work on homeschooling (and, maybe, go sledding as we have great snow on the ground and more is falling!).

We don't treat this holiday any differently than any weekend day.

My Dd's class sang a couple songs, recited a poem, and did a 3 minute play about Harriet Tubman. It was really good.
