Wondering if anyone here is from that area. We have been looking at real estate and jobs around there for future planning, and would love to hear from someone who knows the area

My fmr. MIL used to live there. It is an extremely rugged and isolated area. A 'mill-town' mentality pervades.

I understand there are many teen deaths due to kids racing their cars in the roads in the mountains. Rescues can be hard to due b/c of the geography of the place. One could be lost for days. :S

It isn't big on proactive health or social investment, in terms of women and children.

When doing info searches, you might also want to post about Prince George and 100 Mile House -- two of the next closest 'big' communities. (Everything is pretty spread out!)

What takes you there?
We love the landscape and the property prices are really good;that's about the extent of it! I have a lot of opportunities to transfer there with my job too.
I am really leery of what you are referring to as the 'mill-town' mentality though - we had a negative experience while visiting (revving their engines and trying to initmidate, then throwing stuff on our car after we left) and I was wondering if it was an isolated incident or the norm in those parts.
I live in the South Cariboo. Williams Lake is a nice area, although I much prefer the town of 100 Mile House. One thing to consider is that WL is the crime capital of BC, and just last week there were a whole bunch (6, I think) armed robberies of convenience stores. I'm not sure I'd feel safe living in town, however if you're out of town, (and always lock up your car when you go to town), you'd probably be okay.

From what I've seen, there are a real assortment of people living there. Ranchers, loggers, hippies.

I've heard that Riske Creek, about 30 km west of WL, is nice. The altitude is lower and people can grow fruit trees there, and there is less snow in winter.
Thanks for the post!
Yeah, I think I'm striking it off the list for now. We really liked Horsefly, which was outside of WL, but it was a huge commute for a job.
We definitely liked 100 Mile House too, and the people seemed really nice.
I live in Quesnel (about 1 hour north of William's Lake) and am planning on a move to William's Lake this summer. As far as the car revving and throwing stuff at your car. I have lived in this area for 5 years and that has never happened to me. So I think that is an isolated incident. My husband and I quite like William's Lake. Yes, the down side is the crime. However, it is beautiful there. The shopping is better than 100 Mile (with a Wal-Mart Supercentre coming in November). Also, their hospital isn't bad at all. If we want good hospital care here in Quesnel, we have to travel down to William's Lake. They even have an OB surgeon there that used to be a midwife. So she's awesome about treating childbirth like a natural thing. Anyway, I don't think it as bad as others have said.
Hello!
I live in 100 mile House. We moved here from the city a few years ago, and I love it! I've lived in kelowna, beverdell, whistler, seattle, all over the lower mainland, but there's no place like the 'Boo! We grow our own food, have clean air and water, and a big Cariboo sky. The winters are long, but its a real winter, not a rainy, dull gray Vancouver winter. The summer is beautiful, but nothing tops fall out here! The smell of sun warmed sap, no bugs, gorgeous sunsets, and deer, pine martin, foxes and marmots abound.

There are a lot of moms here that are really into natural parenting, moms that practice EC (elimination communication/diaper free baby), doula's etc. We have a Parent group that meets every thurs, as well as la leche league, all kinds of programs for parenting (including infant massage, father-child programs, nursery rhymes/lullabies, etc.) a community garden, an organic food co-op, and a lot of small schools and home-school support.

I LOVE IT HERE!
