I found one source which suggested pinching your fingers together at waist level (ala pins) but most sites say to use the sign for change. I did both and DS quickly picked up the change sign (although when he did it, it didn't look like "change")

The book that we have suggests patting your hip.

This is the sign that I used with deaf adults. Pointer & middle finger tapping thumb, kind of like a pinch.

But, really any sign would work - as long as you are not planning on having your DC use the signs to communicate with deaf people who use ASL.
i like the change idea, id never heard that one.
im trying to get cassandra to sign but mostly she just yells:
POOP!
over and over very loudly. even when its pee
you can hear forks drop when we eat out

My little one invented her own signs. When she says "poop!" it means she wants to sit on the potty.
we use the ASL sign of "pinching" the thumb & forefinger together. dd's version is closer to patting her hips.
We use "toilet." You make the "t" sign and shake your hand back and forth. I guess we'll use the same one for potty when it comes to it. Haven't really thought about it.
