If so, do you know of any available rentals? My family desperately needs to move and we're having such a hard time finding a place. Any help would be awesome.

Thank you, jamsmama. I've seen those apartment listings before but not the houses. I'll check them out. What would be really nice is to find a "roughing it" kind of cabin for rent in Walpole or the surrounding towns. I don't know how to go about finding something like that, though. Those seem to be word-of-mouth places and I haven't heard of any.

Gilsum is fine. Where is it? I once lived in Gilsum in a great cabin that you couldn't drive to, no electricity, etc. I wonder if it's the same one. Could you give more info?

Thanks a bunch!
if you want to live right across the river (in VT), Bellows Falls has really cheap rentals. If you want "roughing it" may I suggest Westminster VT. That is also right across the river, and I know for a fact that there are people who live off the grid out there.

OK, BF is a formerly crappy village that made a comeback with a artists galleries and such. My old hometown. Sometimes I come into this tribal area and read the posts. Just wanted to suggest it. I don't know if you need to live in Walpole, but BF is seriously right across the river, and pretty darn cheap too. Don't move to North Walpole though. It's cute, but it's...well, maybe I'm biased, but I feel "cracktown" about covers it.

I agree, Bellows Falls and Westminster (esp. Westminster West) are good possibilities. Bellows Falls is actually in pretty good shape. It's cute, they have a good farmers market, and the downtown has really revived in the last decade.
Good luck

oops, about the place in Gilsum- i thought it was a cabin but turns out it is just a studio apt. in the folks home. I was confused because i know that these people also have a couple little cabins on their land.
YOu might give them a call anyways... i'll pm you with their number.

Yes! West West is *awesome*. Artists conclave and all that. So is Putney, but that's kind of far away from the general Walpole/etc area, which is why I didn't suggest it. I know there are off the grid cabins in West West, but unfortunately I don't have any #s or anything, I just know by word-of-mouth.

Again, good luck

But sadly, Bellows falls is suffering terribly from a Heroin/Meth epidemic. N. Walpole runs a close second. I do agree that West West is a sweet little place to live. Saxtons River is good too.

Well, BF has always been *koff* a cracktown. Basically. I probably shouldn't have recommended it. Some parts are ok to live in, but it seems like it's everywhere. Last year when I went to my parents for Christmas, there was a drug raid on the neighbors, and they live on a tiny dead end so that was real fun getting to the house. First it was coke, then it was heroin, then it was meth...when did my hometown turn into North Pole?!!

ok...places in that area that aren't cracktowns (as far as I know)
west west
westminster in general
saxtons river (which is really cute)
gageville (although it's closer to bf than westminster)\
cambridgeport

nh
charlestown?
walpole
