This week I rented the Hypnobabies home program from my midwives. I've tried to listen to it a couple of times, and each time it has made me extreemly irritatble, to the point where I have to jump up and turn the cd off. I've only tried cd 1, so maybe its just that one?

Anyone else had a negative reaction to it? Anyone felt this way at first, but practiced through it and eventually had a great birth due to hypnobabies?

I didn't like it at first either. I'm generally not a "cheesy" sort of person... I'm pretty non-romantical and I guess I'd call myself a realist... and very cynical as well. I'll easily admit that it did rub me the wrong way. I started it very early (around 18 weeks) so I gave myself lots of time to ramp up to doing the program "full-time". We bought the self-study though, so I felt more obligated to continue, and also I'm on my May '07 BBC board and there's tons of women doing it on there and also one hypnobabies instructor (Susan) who's been a great inspiration and help. I'm sticking through it, and I can honestly say I LOVE it. I'm planning a VBAC this time and I have SO much anxiety about it. Doing my hypnobabies practise definitely relieves that anxiety and after a while the "cheesiness" of the program sort of melts away.

I'd say it's definitely worth a shot. I would HIGHLY recommend going to www.hypnobabies.com and signing up for their yahoo group if you haven't already. I've learned TONS from them, and they can really lead you in the right direction. It takes a lot of dedication though for the program to end up working the way it's meant to. It's definitely NOT a quick fix. But after forcing yourself to practise enough times (ugh!) you do end up really enjoying the practise and end up WANTING to do it. I sleep SO much better on the nights that I've practised my hypnobabies. I've also heard enough positive stories that I feel it will truly work in SOME aspect - I may not have a 100% pain free labour/delivery and that's OKAY, but that's what I'm working toward.

Oh, and the yahoo group has tons of birth stories that you can read. They're divided into stories with NO discomfort, and SOME discomfort. I've never heard any negative stories from people who've actually practised the program the way it is meant and used all the tools learned in the program.

Also, another benefit is my SO, Jon, was a really horrible distant birth partner last time. I couldn't even call him a birth partner really... he had no interest in learning about anything birth related and was in sort of denial about the whole thing I think. He's really been getting into this though (after I forced him to watch the dateline movie on self-hypnosis for childbirth - http://www.hypbirth.com/samples.html), doing all the reading, and we've just started practising some of the scripts. I think he's liking the idea that he can actually have an impact and get involved... that he's "in charge" more or less...

Thanks for the response! I am only 21 weeks, so I do have some time to ease into this-after reading your advice I decided to try to just read the manual and listen to the affirmations for a few days. No need to think I have to conquer it quickly. I'll check out the websites- thanks for those!

I used it and loved it, but I do agree that the cd's took some getting used to. What really annoyed me on an ongoing basis was that she keeps saying "more deeper" UGH I'm a writer/editor and it drove me freakin' NUTS. I can't believe nobody caught that grammar problem. But I just decided to make peace with it in order to do the programme.

It's way better than the Mongan hypnobirthing tapes, by the way. I used those for my 1st birth. Now THAT was cheesy.

Oh my goodness Robin YES. I've been often described as a "grammar nazi" and I actually EMAILED Kerry Tuschoff regarding the horrendous amount of errors in the text. I thought I was a lot more kind than I ought to have been, but it drives me CRAZY and I think it really affects the professionalism of the materials. The way the text is formatted drives me batty. Especially when they use parentheses OUTSIDE of the sentence. (like this). DANGIT. That's annoying.

I even offered to freakin edit the whole thing for FREE for her. I think I was a little bit crazed at the moment though.... lol... I fully blame hormones. Nothing's ever my fault these days

This is so funny because I was thinking of this as well... although, not for free. I was going to ask for a partial refund/discount. I just started reading all the intro material. I haven't gotten to the CDs yet, but I'm VERY surprised she continues to allow her products ship out with all those printed errors, ESPECIALLY now that I know other people have notified her about it.
