ick.... the 2 women were birthing without medication..... they were in bed on there backs hooked up to machines!!!! how horrendous!!!!
: it reminded me of ds's birth.

the whole tone was very negative about birthing without drugs...."who knows how long she can push without drugs before her energy runs out!" um really?

and the doctor laughs when she says noot epi and says" you can always change your mind.

it makes me sad because pg moms are watching this and thinking this is what birth is- when it does not have to be.... at all!

Actually, the bit that really got me was in the little "coming up next" bit before the show. It was something like "two women will attempt what many say is impossible, will they be able to withstand the pain? coming up next on a Birth Story".

I saw that episode a year or so ago (when I was compulsively watching all things baby) and it just made me sad.

Seen so many of them.

Very frusterating!

Scream and yell at the TV telling the DRs that they are idiots and the women that they could do so much better!

OK, I done now.

Yes, it was terrible. When I was in the hospital, flat on my back in active labor, I was begging for an epi. So kudos to those women for making it in that setting. But still, they are not typical of what natural birth is like at all. While my natural birth was more painful than my medicated birth, the natural birth was so much better. The poor second woman on the show literally looked like she was going to die when that ridiculous doctor kept telling her to push.

I posted just that in the other birthday rant! I think a big part of the whole reason "only 1 in 10 women succeed" (as was their stat) in having a natural birth is the attitude of shows like that, not because we are incapable.

I was not surprised to see the one woman on her back. disappointed.. but not surprised.

Birth Story is so mainstream
Birth Day (Discovery channel?) on the other hand (if it's still around) does show some awesome natural birth stories. That is where I first heard of and fell in love w/ the idea of birthing w/out pain medication & intervention.

Yeah, baby story can really be frustrating.... we are talking about baby story right?? but sometimes there is a "good" one and since ive never seen a natural birth, im watching carefully for them. Like one lady had a waterbirth with no interventions and no one messing with her, and i saw one recently with a lady who labored at home with her doula until near the end, went to the hospital, and pushed the baby out within 40 minutes. Those are the interesting ones

No, it was Birth Day. I saw it today too. I was sad that the woman going natural who only spoke spanish seemed to get walked on. The english speaking woman at least got to have her bed in a sitting position. I thought it was okay as far as its "facts and figures." The truth is many women seem to want this experience. They don't want to spend the time it takes to educate yourself on birth, and have someone else "handle it for you."

What was really sad was the next one.....three women were laboring and all three ended up c-section. One's 8 pound baby was "stuck." How about allowing her to sit, all fours, stand and rock.........oh wait she can't cause of her epidural. Done venting.

Somebody should start a BABY STORY tribe or something for all these Baby Story/Baby birthing show posts

You konw what's sad about Baby Story though? When it first started, almost 8 years ago, most of the births were natural

I'm thinking the 1 in 10 women has more to do with actual hospital epidural rates, not how many women TRY for a natural birth and succeed. I know my hospital has a 90% epidural rate.
And I know many of those women go in expecting to have an epidural at some point in their labor. They plan for it!

I don't know the sponsers (didn't watch it this time round)...but if you go to the Discovery Health site (http://health.discovery.com/tvlistin...11&channel=DHC (along with the other episodes, including the c/s episode a pp mentioned).

I've noticed these shows generally have formula ads, cord blood banking ads, and insurance ads. All the things a new mother "wants", right?

thank you

although I rather suspected as much. hard to be unbiased and not push what's good for the sponsors. I know it can be argued that they are attempting to appeal to their target audience, but as the target audience is all pregnant women, not specifically formula feeders or (insert other non neutral topic here) then where are the ads for breastfeeding and baby slings...? medicalization and ignorance of all possibilities and choices benefits formula companies/pediatricians/cord blood banks? argh, dont get me started. I dont have issues with donating anything, I am planning to donate my everything in fact, but I am not even going to cut my baby's cord, let alone donate the blood from it :/

pharmaco, vaccinations, right? there's their money...

I watched it, I have a hard time with those shows since my c-section. I thought it might be good to see some natural births, but I was so disgusted. And I noticed how dramatic they tried to make it "Who knows how long she will last." I thought for sure one of them would end up in a section.

I will never go to a hospital again to birth, unless the baby or I have serious complications.
