Anyone seeing a chiropractor?

This is my third pregnancy, and I am only just now learning the benefits of chiropractic care for pregnancy, labor and birth. So far, what I thought was sciatic pain is actually my sacraliliac (sp?) joint in the pelvis. A couple of adjustments and the pain has gone away. We also have a goal of getting everything in proper alignment to facilitate proper positioning and to shorten labor. I had really bad back labor with my dd#2 and if this takes care of that then I just might name my child after the doctor

Anyone else seeing a chiro prenatally??

I go every week for 2 reasons.

1) I have had chronic headaches for years and chiro always helps, besides that I can't take painkillers anymore so it's especially helpful
2) I have this pain that's similar to sciatica but it goes down the front of my leg. Someone here suggested butterfly stretches which really helped for a while but the chiro also helps me to keep it at bay.

She's very kind and gentle and talks to me about birth and natural birth and etc . . . so I really enjoy my time with her.

It's nice to keep aligned while all these changes are taking place in my body.
I go to the chiro all the time. Every couple of weeks. It's great, as with any weight gain and shift of body weight due to pregnancy, the vertebrae can be easily mis-aligned. I can't imagine going through pregnancy withou regular adjustments.
I go twice a week. Dd1 was footling breech and I didn't find out until she had already dropped. So, depsite me doing everything I could to get her to turn, it just didn't happen and I had to have a c-section with her. With ds I started chiropractic at 16 weeks and he was in the PERFECT position when he was born. It was a 5 hour labor and relatively easy getting my 9.3 baby out!!
So, with this babe, I started as soon as I found out I was pg. She does acupuncture and massage and adjustments. If this little girl is breech like her sister was, we'll start doing some acupuncture points to get her to turn. I'll know after I go to the midwife next week.
I went today (to the chiro) and boy do I feel good now!!! It'll get me through the weekend for sure!

So I've never been to a chiro... The closest thing is seeing them on TV programs perhaps, cracking people's necks and things...

Can I have a little newbie rundown in this? What exactly is an "adjustment"? Do they just deal with problems of the neck and back? Doesn't it hurt? (I get creeped out just hearing people crack their knuckles!) Is it something that insurance might cover or is it considered "alternative" medicine and whatnot?

I've been having awful pubic/hip pain since about month 4 and just recently (3 weeks ago?) threw something in my left hip/upper leg out of alignment somehow (hurts to walk because of it), so if this would help I might be up for trying it... But we're on a *really* tight budget, so it would depend on the cost too, unfortunately...

Thanks!

I've been to one adjustment so far. My insurance (Humana) doesn't cover it, but if it did I would be in there every other week. I feel that it is extremely beneficial. It really helped me through some pelvic pain I was having around month 5. I'm due for another adjustment soon but have a hard time coughing up the $45.00. I intend to go several more times before the birth to ensure that we have optimal positioning and possibly have a shorter smoother birth.
I started going to the chiro at about 21 weeks, due to bad sciatica (sp?) pain. after 5 adjustments, the pain was gone! I have continued to go about 2 times a week, and feel it helps imensely. My insurance (Cigna) does cover it, although I have a $25 co-pay each visit.. but it is worth every penny. my chiro has also talked with me about the benefits of adjustments for the baby, delivery and overall health.
the adjustments are very mild- he usually starts at my mid to upper back (by my bra strap) with my laying on my stomach, pressing gently around my spine. then, he will do the same to my lower back (almost at my butt) and even though I hardly feel what he is doing, I believe that is what makes the difference with my sciatica nerve. then, I lay on my side with top leg bent up, and almost twisting my whole upper body over, and he pretty much lays across me using his weight to do the adjustment, and again for the other side. (sorry for the poor descriptions.)

it is not painful at all, in fact I feel better when I leave the office, and even better later that night. I have noticed that sleeping is better, and I am able to function throughout the day. before I saw the chiro, I could hardly walk by the end of the day.

Hopefully this was helpful! Good luck

i'm at the chiro once a week- our insurance does cover it up to a certain amount of visits per person per year, so each visit is only $10. i think it is totally a large part of the reason i feel as good as i do with the twins going into the third trimester. they are also both head down already!

my chiro has a table that adjusts to accomodate my belly as i've grown bigger so i can still lay down on my stomach for the first half of the adjustment. my back, neck and pelvis don't always crack and you don't have to hear them crack to get a good adjustment. the cracking is gases in your joints releasing as they realign. some people's joints crack when they get adjusted and some people's don't. depends on your body.

a good friend of mine got weekly chiro for her two pregnancies and both babies were perfectly positioned with her labors being less than 6 hours. my daughter was OP and i had back labor too so i started going to the chiro to avoid that also.

To answer Alyssa's question:

Most insurance covers some form of chiro. I have seen some that refuse to pay but that seems to be the exception (I used to work for a chiro and just spent a week subbing for one of his secretaries).

An adjustment can feel strange, but after he first time you recognize the feeling and it's FABULOUS. As far as payments, if your insurance doesn't cover chiro, most docs have great plans for those families, cash deals and such.

I have BCBS and my co-pay is around $3.00 per visit and the doc charges $47 per adjustment. Pretty much any part of you can be adjusted. My dh just went in today for pain in his chest and it was determined that one of his ribs were out of whack. So that was adjusted. I go for migraines and it is wonderful at getting rid of them.

As far as hip pain, getting your hips adjusted can really help with the pain and make walking easier, I would give it a try!

I have been going for a few weeks now and will continue until the end of my pregnancy.
I have really bad back pain when I'm not pregnant, and pregnancy just knocks everything even more out of alignment for me. I went last pregnancy on the advice of my OB, because my legs kept going numb. (I'd be walking and *bam* no more feeling in my legs.)

My insurance just started covering 10 visits per person, 25 per family (I think?) this year. We still have to pay a co-pay, but it's better than the normal price. We have the Federal Employee Program BCBS.

It really depends on what method your chiro uses. Mine does what is called the Activator method. It looks like a pen and it applies pressure to the affected disk and doesn't hurt at all. It actually feels really good. Seth loves getting adjusted!!! It is not at all traumatic to your body (sometimes the manual method can be).
She adjusts my pubic bone and MAN it feels SO good!!! My hips are so out of whack (this baby is sitting so low and being my 3rd baby, the relaxin is being released so much sooner), so I love getting adjusted for that.
Some insurances will cover it. I am on Medicaid (dh is in grad school and we have NO money) and they cover it.
If you are going to find a good chiro, I highly recommend going here and finding a chiro who does the Webster Technique. they know how to work with pregnant Mamas and usually do that a lot.

I'm planning to go as soon as I can arrange it. I need to get a referral for my insurance to cover it. I've been having upper back pain from working at the computer with terrible posture. I can't wait to go, so it will stop hurting. I've never considered the other potential benefits during pregnancy. My babies have always been head down and ready to go.
I just started going in Feb. when I hurt my back. It felt great. Only thing I can think of to compare it to, is like when you get off of a rollercoaster. You feel light and floaty (I do, anyway). Since my insurance covers it, I will continue to go, but I think the $45 would be well spent if I did have to pay. My chiro is only having me go once a month, as she said I was in pretty good shape to begin with. I like having an established relationship with someone who can help with positioning, too! My midwives actually recommend a visit each month of the third trimester.

Tia - glad it helped. It is totally worth it to pay out of pocket too. If I had to that is what I'd do. It is amazing how much better I feel after I go!
I'm so excited! Its my birthday this month and my chiro sent me a card for a complimentary adjustment! I really needed this! I'm so glad that I don't have to spend $45 this month! I can buy diapers instead......... (problem is: i don't need diapers.)
I try to go every week. It really helps me. Also seems to keep ds4 healthy; we stopped going for a bit and he got his first ear infection in forever.
He also has had encopresis and the chiro is a great help with that too. (Encopresis= constipation and holding of poop and terrible cycle that follows...)

I love my chiro!
I'm going to forward this thread to him. I bet he'll give some insight into why it's good for pregnant people.

Hi Dr. BJ!!! Love ya!

I'm visiting from the August DDC & am planning on my first visit to a chiro soon (I'm 23 weeks now). This thread has helped me learn a bit about what to expect (I couldn't figure out how they were going to have me lay on my belly w/ despite my big belly!)

I don't believe my insurance covers it... does anyone else have Aetna?
