My husband did, and then said that if I ever bought chicken liver for DD's food again, he was going to throw it away! He didn't just add it in, though, it was a full meal of some sort we made and then pureed.

If you're looking for added iron, egg yolk (cooked!), brewer's yeast, and blackstrap molasses are all good additives. But yes, I would certainly cook chicken livers before giving them to anyone.

I think they'd be a really nutritious baby food.
I've just sautéed the chicken livers in a little butter but for a baby I think you could poach them in simmering water. Be careful not to overcook them, though, it makes the texture kind of unpleasant.

I think he said it because it required a bunch of icky prep work: they came in a plastic tub and he had to go wrist deep and prepare it... honestly I don't really know: I'm a vegetarian so I made him prepare all of DD's meat dishes! I just know that it did NOT look appetizing as he cut them all up.

I give my LO organic calfs liver - from a calf raised organically. Although I see lalaland42's point of this organ filtering toxins. I coat with olive oil & roast in the oven, cool, then puree with BM to a consistency DS likes. BTW he really likes it.

That. I had a biology professor once tell the class that we must all swear to never eat liver and then explained the liver's function and how it is chock full of every toxin the animal's body encounters.

I've read conflicting information. The liver is involved in detoxification, but the toxins do not stay in the liver. Americans in general are very low on vitamins D, A, and B complexes. Liver from pastured animals is rich in all of those.

This sounds right to me. How could the liver possibly store toxins forever? It just helps the body excrete them.

I did not read all the pp's but I did want to comment. In the Nourishing Traditions book (which is my health bible for my LO) they recommend liver after 6 months. My LO's first food will be egg yolks per Weston A Price's recommendation followed by shredded organic chicken liver at 6 months. According to the book you don't have to freeze it but can if you are worried about feeding baby raw liver. I am planning on freezing for 7 days before feeding just to be on the safe side.

The book talks about how our babies are not digestively ready for carbohydrates such as rice cereal until over 1 yr old. They are "wired" so to speak for breast milk which is high in fat and protein. This is also what they need to develop correctly. If you haven't checked out this book I would highly recommend checking it out from your local library!!!
