I'm wondering how possible this is. It is my dream, I have a long way to go, but it would be just myself and my girls. What money goes into a farm logistically and how do you make that money?

I would want something small, small house, couple acres, garden, chickens, a few goats maybe. POSSIBLY someday a horse.

can you really do it alone?

I'm moving back to my parents farm and making money off of what I sell. I don't pay any rent or a house payment, but I am having to support myself otherwise. I am going to be selling produce, plants, and next year eggs. I can let you know how much I make at the end of the season in Oct., but not sure if I can totally suppport myself this way or not. Going to try to figure out something to sell during winter or make enough during the growing season. You could also try doing a CSA.

Thanks so much for the kindness and advice on "that" thread of mine, Torre. I REALLY appreciate it. (as a quick update, DS has been awesome...he's asked a few questions about it and we've answered them. Otherwise, it's history to him. Lesson learned, moved on.)

I am not single, but spend a LOT of time alone, sometimes weeks at a time. (DH is a pilot and sometimes home a lot, or just the opposite, depending on his schedule.)

I am able to do most everything around here. The things I can't do alone are the things that you wouldn't be encountering. For example, we need to build a new chute for working our cattle. Too much welding for me alone. But, doesn't sound like you'd be running a herd of half-wild cattle on your homestead.
I can do everything our smaller animals need. Some days, it gets a little overwhelming, if there's lot of births at once or the cattle are loose in the neighbor's yard and I'm home alone with a 2 month old and a four year old. (The latter happened a few days ago. I dropped off the baby with a trusted elderly neighbor to hold on her lap while DS and I went and ran the cattle back through the broken fence and DS held the light for me and handed me barbed wire staples while I fixed the fence.)

be back later....fussy baby
