I haven't started yet but every morning I glance at the bottle on my kitchen counter and wonder when I am going to get to it.

I read that at 34 weeks you begin taking it orally and 36 weeks you begin taking it vaginally right? So you're already taking it vaginally?

I started taking mine orally a couple weeks ago. I am 36 weeks today so I think I will start it vaginally when we finish my kitchen this week.

Yeah, my MW thinks I might be further along than 34 weeks, so to be safe I started yesterday. I could potentially deliver as soon as the 17th of this month and be ok!

My MW had said to start it (she only ever recommends orally) at 36, so I took some last night. I'm 36w today! Woohoo! Also finally drank some RRLT (I don't really like the stuff!!) - so I'm officially beginning the "let's get baby out!" routine!

What's the scoop- where do you get it, what is it supposed to do, any reason not to, how much to take?
Too lazy to look on the internet...

EPO can help with prostaglandin production. Prostaglandins "ripen" the cervix - get it nice and soft and squishy and ready to dilate for labor. Other natural sources of prostaglandins include semen. But at this point in pregnancy, it's often easier to just take a bunch of EPO! (Even though I highly recommend as much of the other as you can get! And it has other benefits, too!)

You can get it pretty much anywhere, I think. Definitely a Whole Foods type place. I ordered mine from Frontier when I found it on sale and have been waiting till it was time. I'm trying to remember the dosage now. I took 2 last night, but I think it's one that you build up over the weeks. So start with X in week 36, then X+1 week 37, etc. I know I have it written down but don't feel like getting up to find it!

I haven't started taking mine yet because my house is still a mess and I'd be way stressed to have a baby with the house in this condition. Not that EPO would make the baby come NOW but still. I'll start taking mine probably on the 10th when I'll be 37 weeks.

I started taking mine too -- I actually meant to start earlier but forgot!

And I've been so bad about drinking RRL tea this time around, as in not doing it at all. I have a huge box of herbs from Mountain Rose just sitting here in my study making me feel guilty. I really hope they're not too stale....it's been months since I ordered them. :

Ok for vaginal EPO do you break the capsul or poke a hole and squeeze it in? Do you try to get it on your cervix?

It is on my Wild Oats shopping list.

Why are you guys doing it, instead of just letting things happen on their own, is there a specific reason? My CNM suggested that I insert some vaginally, but I keep asking myself what for?

'Cause it keeps us busy and feeling like we're doing something?

Umm, no... But one can certainly argue that things like EPO are "interventions" and unnecessary. I totally believe my baby will be born without EPO, and I don't believe that EPO will MAKE the baby come. But it might make labor easier on me, and that's an appealing thought (mine tend to be quite long). I know there are a lot of nutritional things I *don't* get in a daily diet, too, and some of the supplements that are common simply try to replace those things we lose in our average diet, and kind of balance things out.

CNM said to insert the capsules whole, and whatever doesn't dissolve will come out later. I'm assuming, like what, one a day?

Heather(anyone else also) do you think it will help speed labor along in an easy way? Anyone have any personal experience with that, besides Happy? Is that why your MW advises against vaginally?

Banana, I've never done it internally and never been advised to by my MW. I would say that most people do NOT end up with difficult, precipitous labors after using EPO vaginally. But it's not something I ever felt all that interested in doing! (And now, I'm not sure if I "need" to take EPO at all as my cervix is definitely "ripe" already!)

Bumping this thread because I'm 37 weeks today, and I bought some EPO after my OB appointment.

Took 1 500mg capsule this afternoon (chased by my RRL tea - although I drink only about a cup a day; I'm nowhere near 3 cups/day). I will take (orally) 500mg in am and in pm for the next few days. Then, increase to 2 capsules in am; 1 in pm. Then increase to 1,000mg in am and 1,000 in pm.

IfMommaAin'tHappy's post about vaginal insertion scared me. I am still thinking about/researching doing this as the next step (after 2 capsules in am and 2 in pm).
