Most of the homeschoolers I know here are at least relaxed and eclectic, and there are quite a few unschoolers. The laws are not terribly onerous, though they may seem to be if you've been homeschooling in California. The only real "hey, can I unschool" thing about the laws is the annual assessment requirement, I'd think, but in actuality there are a variety of ways to satisfy the requirement, including parent-administered tests (with the results coming directly back to the family, nowhere else), fairly casual assessments, and entirely parent-constructed evaluations. Note also that compulsory schooling does not begin until age 8 in Washington state.
