I just found out that that is where we are headed. Is there anything you can tell me about it? Is the area crunchy at all?How much snow do you get in the winter? Are there things to do (hiking, skiing, skating, camping, kayaking) around that area? Anything you can tell me about it would be great!!

I don't live up there, but I got married nearby, if that counts
From what I recall, it snowed a week before my wedding. My wedding was Oct. 12... My Dad spent 2 weeks up at Ft. Drum for training and woke up to snow outside his tent one morning... in July. So, yeah, I'd say they get a lot of snow. They're on the western side of the Appalachians, so they get dumped on.

However, it's beautiful country. Seriously beautiful. And seriously remote. Friends who came to my wedding described it as, "Drive north into some f-ing trees. When you almost hit Canada, turn right and drive into some more f-ing trees. When you are about to drive into an f-ing lake, you're there..."

As for crunchy... well, I don't know Fort Drum exactly, but the surrounding region is very impoverished. So, I'd guess not. I think the closest "big" city is Utica, which didn't have much when we investigated it for resources for our wedding. Carthage might have a few good resources. I haven't been there in... oh, god, I think I was 11... 20 years. But, I remember it being a nice little town.

I lived at Ft. Drum for a few years. It's not crunchy. There is one health food store, though. The nearest town is Watertown, which is very economically depressed. The good news is that it is beautiful, there is great hiking and outdoor stuff. The weather in the summer is amazing, and in winter, well, it snows a lot but it's still usually sunny which makes a difference, and when it snows a lot, the whole post shuts down and dh gets to stay home. It was cozy...I liked it. More good news...I found crunchy friends on post without much effort, and Syracuse is only an hour if you want to go to a bookstore or something. Kingston is a beautiful little city, an hour in the other direction. Ottawa is 2 hours, and it is one of my favorite places in the world. Sacket's Harbor, about 20 minutes away is a beautiful spot to sit by the water, a little beach and go to Tin Pan Galley. I still dream about their breakfasts in the garden. Alexandria Bay is fun. Great apple picking in the fall just a little south down 81. Check out a LLL on post and good luck!
