I've heard the side effects from reglan are so bad that most moms can only stay on about 3 weeks or so. A much easier med is domperidone. Only you can't buy it in the US. (A few compounding pharmacies sell it, but it's really expensive.) You can order domperidone from canada with a prescription. You can get it from online places without a prescription, but my experience is the quality isn't as good. I am adoptive nursing after my 2.75 year old was slowly weaning himself. The dom brought my supply up enough that, at most, I only needed 6 ounces of donor milk a day. I was at the highest dose possible 160mg a day. If I was sitting quietly, I would nod off, but otherwise I wasn't tired. When I lowered my dose, that went away. I am at 120 mg a day and need almost no donor milk. WHen I dropped down to 110 mg a day, I needed 1.5 to 3 ounces a day. Most people take 80 to 90 mg a day. You can get more info at asklenore.com.

See my comments under your reglan posting. What if you just take your baby to bed for a couple days. Nurse every 15 minutes if you have to. Remember, babies go through growth spurts and are fussy and nurse non-stop for a couple days then all works out. Try that. Stop pumping if it makes sense. I spoke with a woman once who was so distraught about her low supply. She was okay in the morning, but in the afternoon she was giving about 6 ounces of formula. She saw lactation consultants, midwives, LLL. Then she told me she was so afraid of not having enough milk that she was pumping and freezing. She was freezing 9 ounces a day--more than she was giving in formula. I told her to stop with the pumping and just feed her baby. (Then I went out of town and haven't found out what she did, but you can do the math.)

Hi,
I asked about the domperidone and the doc wouldn't prescribe it because it is not approved by the FDA. I have tried nursing and nursing him, but he is so fussy and angry about not getting enough that he pulls off constantly and my nipples are taking a severe beating.
Also with the milk imbalance that is increasing his fussiness. I am trying to nurse nurse nurse, and I have kicked my husband out of bed
:
I will try your advice though for sure.... The LC did tell me to pump out some fo the foremilk though before nursing and then to pump after he nurses as well.
What kind of side effects? She told me to only take it for 12 days anyhow.

I can't remember. see asklenore.com

What about using a lactaid for supplementing/feeding back your milk. When my supply isn't working for her, i slip in the tube, she gets extra flow and is happy and i get stimulation to make more milk.

I don't get the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. If you don't have enough milk in general, how can you be worried about an imbalance? it seems like pumping afterwards makes sense, but why not let him get all the milk you do make. foremilk is better than formula.

Well, apparently I must have an imbalance because my LO is extremely fussy, gassy, and having green frothy poops. All those things indicate an imbalance. Apparently the quality of the little bit of milk I do have is not so good. We just had a feeding episode and he is extremely fussy at the breast. Pulling off constantly and crying/moaning while feeding. It is very frustrating because I wish I could make it better for him. I think he just wants the milk quickly. Thanks for the lactaid link, looks like something I may look into. I sure do appreciate all your advice and information!

Could it be allergies, possibly to you drinking milk. I'd recommend starting a thread to ask about that because I recall people indicating they had that problem, changed their diet and baby and poop were fine.

i used reglan. i also used fenugreek. i used the lactation aid with the tubes you hang from your shoulder so your baby gets formula while suckling. i used it all.

i didn't experience depression. i didn't know about neurological side effects until recently, and it was three years ago that i used reglan. i don't think my daughter or i had neurological side effects from it.

i only had the one prescription. the Rx gave a certain quantity of pills, maybe 20ish? there was a formula for how to take it to increase milk production. it was something on the order of day one one pill, day two two pills, day three two pills, same for some duration, then tapered down to one and then none. it was only for like a week or so that i took any reglan pills.

i do think it enabled me to have more milk.

in any case, i was able to bring nursing back from the brink of extention (sp?), and we are still nursing today!

I've been thinking more about the frothy, gassy poops. I just don't understand how that could be caused by foremilk. My understanding of foremilk is it has more water than hindmilk. I knew someone who had a HUGE oversupply of milk. She ended up pumping and donating to three other babies. Her daughter would originally get just the foremilk because there was so much of it and she didn't grow so my friend had to eat more fat. The baby also had food intolerances that went away when her mom gave up dairy, nuts, and something else.

Well, I am thinking about what you all are saying, and I am going to make sure I get dairy completely out of my diet. I was told to eat more fats such as avacados and olives. Trying to eat more protein and oatmeal as well.
I did take him to bed last night and nursed him throughout sleep, even let him sleep with my nipple in his mouth. Seems to be working better, I notice I feel a bit fuller this morning. Also did start the regalin last night, gonna give it a try, haven't felt any side effects yet. Waiting to what kind of poop he has today. I just want to make it to 6 months, if I can get there, I will be a happy momma

I'm not sure how long it takes for their systems to clear up once you cut out the allergens. It may be days. Also, it may not be milk, it could be something else, you have to experiment. See what others say about it.

overnight nursing is the best way to get more milk going.
