A week ago my right ring finger became tingly and numb. The next day it spread to my right middle finger. My hand feels swollen but it doesn't look like it is. It's difficult/uncomfortable to make a fist. I think I have reduced strength in my hand/arm and my whole arm feels heavy. Yesterday my right pinky started to tingle a bit. I went to my doc (who I don't think is terribly bright) and he ordered labs and an MRI. My b12 and thyroid were fine, as was the 3rd thing he tested for, but I can't remember what that was. The MRI of my brain was fine, but the MRI of my neck showed a slightly bulging disk. I've been referred to a neuro next.

Prior to my symptoms in my hand, I had other symptoms that I kind of ignored. I've been forgetful and feeling like I might have ADD or something. I can't seem to pay attention, like when one of my kids is telling me about something. Halfway through their explanation I realize I have no idea what they're talking about. I've had to ask them to repeat stuff a lot lately. I've been dizzy off and on and clumsy. I sometimes feel like I have trouble coming up with the word I want to use and a very rare feeling like I can't pronounce words right. I've left my keys in the outside of the lock of our front door A LOT lately. It's not normal for me to do things like that and I've been doing a lot of things like that.

So, at first I was thinking it might just be carpal tunnel and lack of sleep and low blood sugar and being busy (I have 3 young dcs, one is only 11mo). But I was reading that the pinky finger isn't usually involved since the nerve for the pinky doesn't go through the carpal tunnel. The disk in my neck could be it, but people can have bulging disks without symptoms, so that could be unrelated. And I have never had all these other symptoms like this.

Also, maybe totally unrelated, but about 5 years ago I had a full neuro work up. I had a sudden onset of wierd visual stuff after my 2nd baby was born. Kind of like an aura without the migraine. I've had a handful of what I'm pretty sure were migraines in my life, some with an aura. The neuro didn't find anything. My MRI this week showed no changes from the one 5 years ago.

So, what do you think?

Also, do you think there should be more urgency here? I just feel like it's been a week already that something has been VERY wrong with my hand and I don't even have a neuro appt scheduled yet. (By the time I got the # from the nurse, the neuro's office was closed, so I'm out of luck until monday now.)

ETA: The neuro's office just called me back and I have an appt at 9am Monday, so that makes me feel a little better.

Tingling, numbness, lack of strength are all consistent with nerve entrapment or disorders that affect the nervous system. It's reassuring (in MS and brain type things) that the brain MRI was normal. It's sounding like entrapment (vs. other disorders) given the bulge.

I wouldn't encourage you to speculate on what it might be at this point. I had similar stuff and all the worry of the possibilities did me no good (or worse really). I'm really glad you're getting into the neuro quickly. They will sort this out.

No googling, ok?

Oh, I hadn't thought of Lyme! It was seeming more to fit with MS (yes, I'm guilty of Googling! ). I will definitely ask to be checked for that! Thank you!

Can anybody think of any thing else I should ask for?

I was actually hoping that's what it was since it seemed like the easiest to fix, but unfortunately my level is fine. Thanks though!

I'm in the middle of my own "guess the diagnosis" myself, only mine's been going on for over 4 years. I am waiting to hear from my doctor about my last test results, and his only response to my last email was, "Are you coming in really soon?" which of course makes me nervous & my appt. isn't for another 2 weeks!!

Anyway, I am personally considering a B12 supplement even though my levels are in range... I found some evidence that the US limits may be too low & people with levels between 200-300 may still see improvement with supplementation & some countries (Japan I think?) have a lower level of 500! (Mine was just barely above 300).

I hope you get a diagnosis soon!!

Thanks for the B12 info. I guess I'll have to ask what my level is.

I hope you figure out what's going on with you soon too! Can you get in sooner than 2 weeks? I don't think I could wait that long!

I too have been going through the weird tingling w/other symptom diagnosis chase for the past few months. One other idea for you to look into is mercury poisoning (do you amalgam fillings?).

Somehow I've managed to go 35 years without a cavity, so no mercury there. Are there other likely sources? I've also thought about getting my lead level checked, since we live in a very old house. Could that be it?

Would you consider seeing an acupuncturist or chiropractor?

I would. I saw a chiropractor during my last pregnancy for hip issues. I think I want to figure out what's going on first though.

I'm thinking of you today. I hope the appointment was very helpful?

I would do a lead check. I don't think it's likely responsible/your answer but if you've got heavy water contamination or something like that it could be. I'd check.

Thank you. My appointment was ok, I guess. He doesn't think it's anything too bad like MS. He's suspecting that my hand is likely the disk, so he ordered x-rays of my neck to get a better look. He also ordered more labs. Not for Lyme, though. He said my pcp would have to do that.

Thanks. I guess I'll see what the neuro says next, I go again on monday, and then see about getting my pcp to check for Lyme and lead.

The feeling in my middle finger seems to be coming back slightly, so maybe this will all just resolve on it's own.
