A woman who complained that some fellow passengers spoke Arabic and "had odd behavior" prevented a Chicago-bound American Airlines flight from departing San Diego, police said Wednesday.

Flight 590, scheduled to depart at 11 p.m. Tuesday, left its gate about 11:15 but returned to the boarding area after the woman, who was traveling with at least one child, indicated she wanted to get off the airplane. The flight then was unable to make Lindbergh Field's 11:30 p.m. curfew for departures, said Irene McCormack, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Harbor Police.

Of course, this is a natural occurrence of the war on terror/Arabs/Muslims, etc. I'd hate to see what % of Americans think American Muslims or American Arabs should be detained like the Japanese Americans during WWII.

You know what bugs me about these stories? Is that we don't really know what happened.

Seriously, someone could have had some really odd/disturbing behavior OR she could be racist/mentally ill and delusional/other/all of the above/etc.....

It's impossible to know what was really going on in that plane.

That's horrible. All prejudices aside, Arabic is just a language the same as Farsi, Chinese, Hindu, Spanish, and yes, English. How do they know they weren't Muslim at all, just spoke the language because that's what their natural origin is? It's ridiculous.

I'm reminded of listening to my niece and her new husband talk about a short flight from San Diego to Arizona.

'There were a group of them... you know, with the veils and headresses... and they were talking in Arabian.... None of them did anything but everyone on the flight kept a close eye on them. A couple of them got up and went to the bathroom. That was pretty tense.'

I was supposed to feel for the other passengers when I heard the story... all I could think was... how terrible it must feel to know you are so, so scrutinized!

There was more about this on the news. If I remeber correctly, these men were engineers/contractors and I think they were working for the defense department.

I was wondering what the official policy on this is. Is there some FAA rule or does it vary by airline, KWIM? It just seems so arbitrary.

Okay, doing a search for Farsi brought this up..I cant believe I miss it.

Okay, sad to say... BUT, honestly anytime i'm on a flight and I see certain "types" of people...I get really antsy.

now..mind you, Im a Muslim women, dh and I speak Farsi (I'm not 100% fluent thou-call me lazy when im in the states!), and usually we are flying to or from Iran to or from USA and I also cover.
But, I can honestly say, anytime I am on a flight home, from our European stopping point, if I see other Muslims who have a certain "look" about them, I do get a bit antsy. Its horrible, I know...but thats how I am.
meanwhile I'm sure non-Muslims look at me and freak out on flight as well...but.
I donno.

Actually last flight...we stopped in Paris and ALOT of people coming back from Syria got on and dh and I were both antsy...and actually many of the other Iranians who were flying through to the USA like us...were equally antsy.

Its SO bad! Look at what the media has done to us!
Even us Muslims are wary looking at other Muslims...those of us who dont have an Arab connection look wary towards Arab Muslims...

Audhoobillah (God forbid!).

Its So sad!

I'm reminded of the story in Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria... The author, a black woman relates that once she was out driving with her son, who is a young black man in America and the saw a young black man, probably 16 or 17 running on the sidewalk. Her son said something to the effect of "I wonder if he is running from the police" or "I wonder if he just robbed someone." He had basically bought that much of the media's story of who he is. It is sad but unfortunately not surprising that the same thing is happening to Muslims.

My heart goes out to you, sisters.
