Are Bell-Bottoms Still In Style?

1015 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Epicurus
I was going through my maternity clothes from when I was pg with ds (3 years ago) and most of the pants have "flared legs" (I think that's the correct term). Of course, I don't have any pants like that either before or after pregnancy, but when you're pregnant, if you shop at Motherhood Maternity, your only option is to look like a fashionable teenager (who's probably unwed too if she's pregnant). I hate that store.

But seriously, is it okay for me to wear my pants that have flared legs? I had so much trouble finding pants that were comfortable last time. Usually I'm a minimalist when it comes to pants (only a few well-loved pairs) but my maternity stash almost has more pants than shirts. I really don't want to do that pant-hunt again, but I don't want to look like an out-of-fashion idiot either.

Did I mention that I hate shopping for clothes?

Those of you who have eyes for fashion - can I wear my "flared leg" pants again? Thanks!

LOL what a great thread!

I hope flared pants are still in style. I'vee been wearing them since middle school.
i would say yes, they are still in style. in january, mere days before i found out i was pregnant again, my mom and i went on a shopping spree at the j.jill store and i found 3 great pairs of pants and they all have flared legs. i almost returned them when i found out i was pregnant for sure, but then realized that i will really need pants after this babe is born so i exchanged one pair for the next bigger size so i could wear them now, too, and kept them all.

??? cakefight, I'm confused.

About flare, I'd say they're pretty IN, since I can't find anything else
:

They're not my thing.

From what I can see, flared pants are in still in style. The 3 pairs of pregnancy jeans I got back in Dec have flared bottoms. Though it looks like the *very* latest styles for spring/summer have straighter legs - but nothing like extreme tapers.

But seriously? Who cares? Wear what looks best with *your* body shape - regardless of what's "in" style (which will change in a few months anyway). I wear flares, wider legs, capris...whatever looks good on me. I refuse to wear straight/pencil leg pants, shorts of any kind, slim skirts, or miniskirts 'cos they look **atrocious** on me - pg pr not. That, and they don't fit my bodacious body type!

I doubt anyone will give you grief over the pants you're wearing.
And you won't look like an out-of-fashion idiot, unless your pants are the goofy printed chef's pants (or the weightlifter's pants from the mid-90's...)

No, no. It's that I feel like one, and I'm not. I felt like I needed blue nail polish to go with what they had for sale. I'm not a teenager, and I don't want to look like one. And I am in a stable relationship (happen to be married). I just feel a bit out of my element there with their style of clothes. That's all. Each store may be a bit different - that's just how I feel at the one we have in town.

ETA...I buy most of my non-maternity clothes at Lands End. Plain colored shirts, plain pants. If someone sells maternity clothes like that, I would like to know who it is because I haven't found them yet. Teenagers are typically the most fashion consious people (how many people can you guess their age by how they dress because they still dress like they did when they were in high school?), and most teenagers aren't married and into having a family, etc.

So please do not think that I am scoffing at unwed young pregnant women - nothing could be further from the truth.

I would say it depends on the intensity of the flare. Bell Bottoms and flares are two different things! Bell Bottoms came back in in the mid-90's. For several years after that flares very were in. Since then, the popular style has been Boot Cut, or smaller flares. Boot Cut is just a very minimal tapering out from the knee to the bottom hem of the pants, and they are not tight on the thighs like the flares and bell bottoms of the 90's (or 70's). Boot cut and straight leg are the trend now. A 19-20 inch leg opening appears to be the standard. Capris are also huge.

Likewise, I would like to know where on earth a person might be able to find some MODEST maternity clothes. No tank tops, no sheer fabrics, no cleavage. It is very hard for a Mormon woman here to find anything to wear normally, much less while pregnant... which doesn't make sense considering Mormon women tend to spend more time pregnant than the general population!
Just wanted to let you know that Land's End does have maternity. I don't know why, but it's only on their overstock/clearence site (which is fine with me
). Here's the link.

i've found the most simple, nicest fabric maternity clothes at the tiny little boutique-y baby and pregnancy stores in town. i took one look at the mall maternity store and knew it wasn't for me.

Yup, flare legs are still in, at least if you look at Gap/Old Navy maternity.

I know what you mean. Until just a few weeks ago I was wearing my basic favorite tees from Gap with my maternity jeans... I just feel most comfortable in basic sweaters and tees with blue jeans.
