You know, I was told once that black was a protection color because it concealed your aura and therefore made you less vulnerable.

Makes sense to me, because once I was out of high school, and in an enviroment where I felt safe, I stopped wearing black all the time. And as to all the makeup and dressing up and such, I only went full-out for that when I was out clubbing, and well, I haven't been OUT really since I had kids so it's sort of a non-issue. But I'm still a little gothy when I do get a chance to dress up and go out.

Well, I do wear a lot of black and my dd is named Raven. WE also have a black pirate kitty and work at the local renfaire (maybe that just makes us geeks.) Dd's only 8, but is an aspiring goth. When my parents asked what she wanted for her birthday she said "a studded choker" and because she's an only grandchild she got three. The other day I woke up from a long pregnancy-induced snooze and she had painted her fingernails black and was wearing black lipstick. It was ssooo cute. I think she thinks goth has a lot to do with the Nightmare Before Christmas and Emily Strange. I think its hilarious because I have no idea what real goth music or culture is these days. She makes me feel old

Wow, actually just about everything lately, from the old-school Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, to newer bands like The Last Dance (Jeff, the singer, is the one that told me to get off my butt and marry DH finally lol), Bella Morte, and Voltaire for giggles. But ... I also listen to a huge mix of rock, hiphop, and 80s synthpop (depeche mode, erasure, then also berlin, blondie, fleetwood mac, et c) Depends on my mood =)

darkpear : i'm pretty much lapsed, unless the kids somehow all go to grammy's on the same weekend *lol* burpup, drool, dog hair, toddler food and diaper creme don't mix well with corsets or boots
It took me quite a while to learn that *lol*

The last few times I've been to clubs, it really seems the scene is changing - a lot. Either that or everyone always acted that young and stupid, and I'm only old enough to notice it now. Around here, it's pretty common in the local high schools .. yet more for the shock value and the f'you than the culture or the music.

To me it was always the music, I still get lost in Peter Murphy, Jeff Diehl, Andrew Eldritch .. The last time I went to a club, the Sisters of Mercy was playing, and a whole two people were on the dance floor, most people there had no clue who they were. Yet the dj gets aggravated and throws on house of pain's "jump around" (yep, the lovely hiphop anthem) and the floor's packed. *boggle*

I dunno - i feel old.

and sadkitty : if renfaire's make you a geek count me in! i worked two summers as the kissing wench at the gate of king richard's faire in Massachusetts!

MamaDaednu : have you ever heard "gothabilly"? What I've heard kicks butt! The only band I can think of is Ghoultown, though .. I met them/saw their show in 2001 at DragonCon (yep, geeky scifi/fantasy festival)

DH and I have mellowed out a lot in our advanced age. You wouldn't even know it to look at me that I've got a heart black as coal.

We just got to go see his most favorite
band on the planet, together again after 10 years.... Skinny Puppy! It was
totally awesome. My first night away from the babe, too...

Standing in line in the bathroom with a bunch of goth girls, all I wanted to do was ask, "is anyone else here a mom?"

I'm not a mom yet, but I am an ex-goth!

When I was a goth, I always thought it would be so sweet to have a newborn onesie that read "World's Smallest Goth". But I won't get that chance now. I sold all my paraphanalia on eBay and don't have any more black lipstick. (My mom used to call me Liverlips.) But I still like to get dressed up in the few clothes I saved and go out dancing a few times a year. Unfortunately, since we moved to the West Coast, I have no one to go with so I don't go as often as I'd like. I took out all my piercings except the belly button but I do have 4 tattoos (3 fairy-related, 1 LOTR)

I still like the music - lots of new wave, new romantic, old school goth, etc. but I also listen to a lot of other music now: lots of international ethnic music, ragtime, early American ethnic folk (rural Appalachia, etc.) etc. Dh used to be a Joy Division fan
: (<----DH) (Don't tell anyone I told you that!) but he doesn't really like that stuff anymore. So I wait until he's out of the house and then dance around to my silly music.

Ex-Goth here....... funny, I really am pretty embarassed about it. And believe me It is hard to be goth in Florida, where you melt in black, makeup, and long clothes, tights, etc.

I look like an old , fat, hippie wanna be, momma now. But I secretly love to here my son like goth music, punk, etc.

Anyone else ever LOVE The Cockteau Twins? I can't remember how it was spelled??

Yeah, for me it was sort of a goth/slutty look, so gaining 25-30lbs kind of puts a damper on that sort of thing.

But I was always more into creative and different than exactly goth anyways. Like black velvet dress, dark tights--and florescent tourquoise tweedy bird high-tops.
Or one day after wearing black jeans, black shirts for forever, I went to school wearing a floor length white chiffon dress. Just trying to keep people guessing!

I didn't listen to the goth music unless I was out. Some local bands I bought their stuff, but mainly I listened to stuff that was coming out around the time I was born. Some of the then-new bands like G&R too, but mostly, while all my friends listened to Metallica and Whitesnake, I was collecting old Eagles albums. Now, the only new music I've bought lately is Evanessense (love it,
love it--but still can't spell it) and Jett.

PikkuMyy--where on the west coast are you? PNW?

after months of wearing all black velvet, black dresses, black lace tops + black flowing skirts (along w/ simple black eye makeup + white face foundation, and black boots)... i went to school in a long white thick cotton dress and no shoes. from that day on, one of my friends called me Jesus.

i love evanescence too.
i'm more about indie world music now though...
