So I went to the therapist my doc referred me to today--I don't think I will be going back. She spent almost the whole time talking about how she thinks she had PPD when her son was born and she thinks it was caused by her spending too much time with him and making him her whole life. She then recommended that I read Baby-Wise and Growing Kids God's Way and tells me that these books recommend teaching your baby to sit in a playpen or something and amuse themselves for an hour or more a day and that one of the books teaches you how to discipline your children--the example she gave was when you tell your child to do something they say "Yes mam" and then they do it--ARGH!! It totally sucks that you finally want to get help then you go to someone who is a total quack!! Sad thing is, my doc said there aren't many choices around here and he has heard she is the best of what we have. I guess I will have to try another town or take the meds the doc gave me

No advice, but I wanted to respond I saw two terrible therapists after having ds, I could go into it, but sadly you are not alone in the bad experience. It really turned me off from the whole profession, I'm sure there are good ones out there but I didn't find them, one I even drove 80 miles to see.

Please don't give up! It took many tries before I found someone who has helped me SO much. I had avoided seeing MDs except for prescriptions because of, well, you know, authority issues, etc. The person who helped me most is an MD; I still go to talk to her twice per month. She is a SMART lady and if I ever have a baby girl I will name her after my MD!

how disappointing for you! And I thought therapists were there to listen, not to babble on and on. And to be an Ezzo fan--yuck! If insurance is paying, then I'd say keep trying to find a good one. You just never know. You can always go in w/ low expectations and have more of an "interview" to see if the therapist meets your criteria. Maybe being AP or not isn't as huge as just being a good listener and helping you understand what's going on in your head, yk? Not that I know a whole lot, but I just thought I'd share. I hope things get better for you and that you find someone who can really help.

You could see if you can interview them on the phone first, ask how they go about dealing with clients, etc... the best therapists are those who can draw out issues, without talking much, who can ask you about something like how your day was and the next thing you know you're talking about how something in your childhood made you sad or something.... and you have no clue how they got you to that point.

Those types who simply analyze you and tell you that you have this complex or that complex, are terrible, that type of therapy never works.

I forgot to tell you one other detail about our encounter--she told me that boys who are attached to their mothers have major issues with maleness--in fact this could be why males become *gasp* homosexuals :LOL Hmmm, I wonder what happened to my DH since he was raised by two women

when I was younger I had serious mental health problems, and saw many different therapists. They were all fairly evil and/or clueless people, except for one lady, who just happened to be a nice person-- .

I found much greater support through friendships and talking to people who had similar problems as myself. I also found that social workers tend to be much kinder than therapists/ psychiatrists... I'm not sure why. I also think support groups as opposed to one on one therapy can be helpful, because the group dynamic adds a layer of protection (I was exploited by more than one therapist).

Good luck to you, you will find help.

Oh my goodness!!

A therapist should NOT be talking about her own experiences, beyond saying "I had PPD too so I understand what you're going through." She should also NOT be telling you what to do- she should be helping you figure out your own feelings and support your choices. Her personal parenting choices should never, ever, be brought into therapy.

Just because she's well recomended doesn't mean that the other therapists are "worse." Somebody with no experience with PPD (and no baggage re
arenting) might be a better fit for you.

If you want to educate her/complain to her hospital/partners/insurance company etc. Ezzo's methods have been condemned in a press release from the American Academy of Pediatrics for endangering babies and causing dehydration and failure to thrive. It has even been shown to cause DEPRESSION symptoms in babies! If you want links/sources just respond to this thread and I'll help you find some.

GKGW is Christian...whether or not YOU are how can that possibly be professional?

OMG, this therapist is truly sick. She must have penis envy or something.
:LOL Too bad you didn't tell her that people who are homophobic are usually closet homosexuals themselves. That usually shuts those types up quickly.

amazing people that messed up can even have a professional license.

Don't give up; it's like any other doctor or midwife or school for the kids, you have to find the one that's right for *you.* Unfortunately you get to see, in the process, how many people giving advice need a good dose themselves.
