We are essentially overusing all of our modern technology to kill our moms and babies. I have NO DOUBT it saves some babies, but also that it is killing more than it's saving. Women are clueless and our society and medical establishment is fooling us on a daily basis. Birth is a natural process, why don't people understand that?!

i hear ya....

it is even more frustrating when women don't realize that they can ? what they are told. it is not a bad thing to ? authority. no one cares more about our bodies and babies than us.

then when we do try and educate others we are told that it is "none of our business" OR "why do you care?". i happen to be a compassionate person and i care because there is needless suffering going on that does NOT have to happen.

it's nice to be able to get stuff off our chests, ((HUGS))

I just got an email from my (ezzo following) cousin asking me when my due date was. Someone "told me May 21st, and I couldn't figure out why your doctor would let you go so long past your due date."

Oh this statement gets me on so many levels and it just seemed appropriate to rant about it here. First that my doctor 'let me' - because I definitely shouldn't be making my own decisions - not to mention how MEAN it is to MAKE ME stay pregnant. Not to mention the laughability of due dates to begin with.

speaking of let, a friend of mind just read me an essay from her vbac today newsletter. the main word in the essay was let. she was gonna scan and email the article to me. it was very well written.

Since the 1960's our infant and maternal mortality rates have sucked.

Yet, more and more technology is presented as "the answer".

I wonder what our rates will look like when our cesarean rates are at 65%? 70%? 90%?

Having a vaginal birth will be a novelty, that's for sure.

I'm not anti-modern medicine by any stretch... I'm not anti-ultrasound, anti-C-section, anti-vax, even. I very much am anti- GOING INTO IT BLINDLY. I just want women to look at good balanced information before making decisions for themselves and their babies. We all have the right (responsibility, even) to ask our doctors or midwives or pediatricians or whoever, for more information, or more time to make a decision, or to decline what are becoming standard procedures.

I agree with you .. BUT....
when you have a medical provider who is telling you ...
For example...
YOU HAVE HAD A PREVIOUS C/S 10 YEARS AGO, AND ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE HAD 2 VBAC AND 2 HBAC YOU MUST HAVE A REPEAT C/S... THERE IS NO CHOICE. YOUR BODY HAS A HIGHER CHANCE OF UTERINE RUPTURE AND IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO BIRTH VAG.
or...
YOU MUST PRECONSENT TO A C/S JUST TO HAVE ANY PRENATAL CARE DUE TO A PREVIOUS C/S
or...
WE WILL ALLOW YOU TO ATTEMPT A VBAC, BUT.....
IF YOU GO PAST 40.5 WEEKS WE MUST DO A C/S DUE TO THE FACT VBAC ATTEMPTS CAN NOT BE INDUCED AND YOUR CHANCES OF UTERIN RUPTURE ARE MUCH HIGHER AT 41 WEEKS.

Yes, these are all things I was told by Medical providers.. sOBs and Mw (under sOB supervision). Its so sad how these damn providers can hurt women and not help them out. I am by no means saying all providers are this way!!!! But the ones who are there for the mother/baby/family are being pushed out of the loop by these money grubbing providers.
PROPAGANDA PROPAGANDA!... get this.. called the local hosp in my town to ask about birth.. just as fyi.
vaginal birth....$5,000.00
c/s...... $16,000.00
now this is JUST FOR THE BIRTH ITSELF.. nothing else..
again PROPAGANDA!
off the now.
Sorry, got a bit carried away there.. :LOL

And to follow on this and Tummy's rant - its so sad that more often than not when you do think for yourself and make informed decisions, you then have to fight to be able to follow through on it. It's appalling how much of the ideas and concepts we embrace here at MDC are not just out of the mainstream, but actively opposed by the mainstream.

Hmmm, mainstream ideas generally seem to be the ones that make the corporations the most money. I am anti-corporation. Why don't we have more laws in place to curb the corporations influence over everything? We don't because they run everything...

Okay, now I feel like a conspiracy theorist or something.

When I went on the hospital tour put on by our Tricare Military Insurance here in Germany, the rep (in response to a concern I had about what appeared to be a high C/S rate for Americans in a particular hospital) responded that American women are weaker and there fore have a harder time birthing vaginally.

I then asked, "To clear it up, it's because we're wusses, and not because we carry private insurance and every Dr. Tom/Dick/Harry who touches us get's to charge us for the experience?"

I then asked to see the statistics of C/S rates for military members at the hospital vs. locals. The rep left pissed at me. And came back telling me the rate was 30% accross the board. American, German, Greek, Turk... all alike. To this day I don't know if she told me the truth. But if she had, then it blew her "American's are weaker" theory out of the water.

Ugh. I don't know why I mention this... except for I trully think the almighty $$ (or Euro as the case might be) really drives most of the intervention decisions in most hospitals.
