This doesn't sound good:<br><a href="http://www.realcities.com/mld/krwashington/8696987.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp" target="_blank">http://www.realcities.com/mld/krwash...printstory.jsp</a><br><br>
That use of "involuntarily" has a dragooned vibe to it.

The repeated use of the word "involuntary" was certainly an attempt to create that vibe. Most Reserve activations are involuntary. Ya think they call people up and say "Hey, call the boss and kiss yer wife good bye... if ya want to go to Iraq that is?" And the fell says "Ya-hoooo!"???? They haven't done it since the Gulf War Classic... so it's nit like it's unprecedented. You want to get me over-wrought at least find something they haven't done since Korea.

Some more interesting info here: <a href="http://www.prospect.org/weblog/archives/2004/05/index.html#003014" target="_blank">http://www.prospect.org/weblog/archi...ex.html#003014</a>

I'm sorry to be a pill, but I don't find that more interesting... if anything less so.<br><br>
Here's the thing... if you bother to read the fine print when you sign up for military service (which admittedly, few people do...) you know that you have made an 8 year commitment. 2 yrs active/6 yrs IRR, 4/4 5/3 etc.... That is the deal. We needed to call up the IRR for the first Gulf War... why is it even remotely startling that we need to again.<br><br>
Sorry... just not getting it. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/headscratch.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="headscratch">

Thanks Kama, was just about to point this out. If you join the military you join for at least 8 years (although not all of it may be active)<br><br>
A lot of people were called up from the IRR following 9/11 in order to provide extra security to bases and other places. We knew several people that this happened to . And while some people might not have been happy about it everyone knew that's what they agreed to when they joined.

IF before the invasion of Iraq you asked any of the drips who run the Pentagon last year that they would be in this position, they would have laughed at the question. Original planning had 100,000 troops left in Iraq at this time last year. Now it's planning to peal away 3600 troops based in South Korea and send to Iraq to keep the current level of 135,000 (<a href="http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/world/ny-worums183807608may18,0,3658673.story?coll=ny-worldnews-headlines" target="_blank">http://www.newsday.com/news/nationwo...news-headlines</a>).<br><br>
Just another example on the ever-growing list of how this administration could f*ck a one-car funeral.

Oh... I see your point RD... I'm just so far past seeing lies from the White House and the Pentagon as news I actually couldn't get what you were on about! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/ROTFLMAO.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="rotflmao">

Can they still technically call you up at any time for the rest of your life? I thought my brother said something like that, he was in the marine corp reserves and went to the first gulf war.
