I was in the waiting room with Nate, and a little five-year-old boy and his mom were waiting for Grandma. The little boy was fascinated with Nate.

Nate started to whimper a little bit while I was paying my copay, and the little boy says "Does he want some milk? Is he hungry? Babies eat milk!" I laughed, and told him that Nate wasn't hungry. "Is he thirsty? Does he want some water? There's a water fountain over there." I told him Nate couldn't drink from a water fountain, but I didn't think he was thirsty.

About five minutes later Nate was fretting because he wanted down. The little boy said "Are you sure he's not hungry? I think he is. I think he wants some milk. Do you have any milk? Can he have some milk? Do you have any bottles of milk in your bag? Are you going to give him a bottel of milk?" I told him I really didn't think Nate was hungry and that I didn't have any bottles of milk.

He turned around and told his mom "She doesn't have any bottles for her baby, mom! How is he going to get milk?" His mom said "Not all babies drink out of bottles, sweetie. Some babies breastfeed -- you breastfed for 18 months. I don't think that she's starving her baby."

The little boy got all excited and turned around and looked at me -- "Do you have milk for him in your breasts?" I said yes, that's right, that's how he gets his milk. He said "Oh good. I'm glad he can have some milk. But he's not crying anymore so maybe he doesn't need any milk right now. But you have some for him in your breasts if he needs it, right?"

I was just absolutely tickled to death with this, and I thought I would share.

How cute! I once had a little boy (about 4?) ask me if I had "those things on your body that make milk" when he saw me with my baby in a restaurant. His mother sank about 6 inches into her seat! :LOL

On a sadder note, I was talking to the 7 year old daughter of an aquantance when my ds was a newborn. She said "I know what your baby drinks. He drinks formula, right?" (This girl had a baby sister, obviously bottle fed.) I said no, that he drank breastmilk.

Girl: "What's breastmilk???"

Me: "It's milk my body makes for the baby"

Girl, totally confused: "How does he drink it?"

Me, a bit taken aback and thinking fast : "He drinks it from my breasts. Have you ever seen a kitten or puppy drinking milk from it's mother?"

Girl: "yeah"

Me: "Well, it's just like that. Human babies drink milk from their mothers too."

Girl: "Oh, O.K. I just didn't know *people* could do that."

Kinda sad, huh? That a 7 year old girl is totally clueless about breastfeeding. I'm glad she brought it up though. At least she'll head into puberty knowing that her new breasts are good for something besides making a man drool. : How much you wanna bet she knows way too much about *that* "function" of breasts?
