Hi, my husband has a conference next week in Atlata at the Georgia Dome. We're comming along for the ride

I'm wondering what cool (yet not to expensive) things Me and the kids (ages 7 and 10) can do in Atlanta. I have RA and can't do a lot of walking

Any good water parks? Golf? Bowling? Great sights? Museums?

I'd appreciate any suggestions - and if you ever make it out to Detroit - I'll be sure to guide you

There's SO MUCH to do that without knowing more about your RA, budget, etc. I'm not sure what to say!! There's White Water and Six Flags. If you are staying downtown, you might make a cheap but kid-attractive day as follows:

Start with World of Coca Cola

http://www.woccatlanta.com/ $9 adults $5 kids

At the end the kids will get completely heffed up on caffeine at the sampling bar.

For more of the World as Created By Woodruff, you would proceed in your rental car to the Emory Clairmont Campus and park. http://www.emory.edu Or just take a cab to main campus.

Take the Emory pollution-free shuttle bus through Lullwater Park to main campus and get as close to the Carlos Museum as possible (Free). Go see mummies. OOOOhhh ick.

Walk a couple of blocks to Emory Village for a late lunch at Everybody's Pizza and dessert at Cold Stone Creamery.

Go back to campus and take the shuttle BACK to Clairmont Campus. Go to the SAAC pool for the rest of the afternoon. It's a really nice pool and if you are sure you're going to plan to go, PM me and I will give you my IRL name so you can go up to the desk and say, I'm a guest of anonymommy, here's our $5 guest fee (not sure how much a guest kid is). We are there most days but I don't think they often check to see if your member is actually there. For a treat, change in the reserve locker room so you can get the ambience of the real wood lockers. The cafe where you can get sandwiches, fruit, ice cream, etc. to eat at the pool is reasonably priced and open until 5pm.

Rain alternative to the pool -- Fernbank Natural History museum just a mile or two down Clifton Road south of the Emory campus.

WOW!! Thank you! You mentioned some wonderful stuff - that's JUST what I was looking for!!

We'll stay away from the Coke factory due to kids alergies, but all the other stuff sounds simply WONDERFUL! the kids LOVE to swim. I'll likey PM you later tonight.

Thank you! I know when you're local you know the REALLY great stuff to do! I looked at the water and amusement park, but the prices are outragous!

If you guys want to go to the zoo in Grant Park, I can meet you there and we can use my family pass, so it would be free.
There would be some walking involved, but it can be as much or as little as you want. PM me if that interests you.

If it's raining, there's an I-Max theater at Fernbank, though I'm not sure what's playing.

Another fun day would be to go to the kids museum. I think it *might* be a little young for the 10 yr old, but maybe not. Check it out here, and if you have a museum membership in your hometown, often there is a reciprocal plan.

Right across the street is Centennial Olympic park with the fountains that kids can play in and free concerts. Its been muggy and in the 80's here, so a day in the fountains would probably work out well. (Free). Across from there is also CNN Center where you can take a tour and see how the news is made.

Another freebie is the GA Capital if you are into history, etc. They have free tours, and its a neat building. There is a museum there too, with weird stuff like a 2 headed snake. (Not sure what that has to do with govt? :LOL )

Near the capital is Underground Atlanta, pretty much just a shopping mall, but most people say you need to visit it when you go to Atlana. I like the pralines in the candy shop.

The zoo is a bit pricey and from what I understand, not much compared to other metro zoos, so you might want to skip that one.

You can also tour the governors mansion and the Atlanta History Center is near there as well.

A few other cheap places that some mamas like are the Chattahoochie Nature Center and some of the State Parks around the area. I love Amicalola Falls, but its probably around 2 hours from downtown Atlanta.

Then there are the usual water parks, Six Flags and other stuff that you can find everywhere else.

Some other advice, if you are travelling outside of downtown be careful of traffic and plan accordingly. Its horrid! So avoid travelling out of downtown between 4-7 by car.

Oh and here is one more site for things I may have missed! 50 fun things to do and see in Atlanta.

Have fun! :LOL

ETA: Didn't see the post above when I was posting. The zoo for free is fun. I just don't think its worth the high ticket price if you were just going for that!

Thank you all! We saw and did so much! We had MARTA passes, so we didn't have to worry about parking. What a clean and friendly city! The kids kept saying the people were a lot like here at home. I only wish it were easier to get around for people like me with a bad hip.

The whole city was taken over by people attending the convention - it was so odd! Everywhere we went - people were wearing shirts or carrying totes from Primerica!

We went to the AMAZING Botanical Gardens one day - spent the whole day there in AWE!

DS got to eat at the Hard Rock Cafe which was a treat! He got a pack of Hard Rock Atlanta guitar pics and now he dosn't want to use them!

DD's highlight was the fountains at Central Park - what a great place! All those squeeling kids getting wet!!! They had their clothes on when we found it and looked like drowned rats! Unfortunately, dd has a terrible rash and was unable to go in the pool
.

The Underground was so packed the day we tried to visit. It was the last day of the convention and wall to wall people. DD got a bit freaked, so we grabbed lunch, ate on a staircase (there was NOWHERE to sit). We did see nice band play, then went on our way to Central Park to cool down in the fountains.

Again, thank you all for your wonderful suggestions! I felt very welcome in Atlanta and would definately like to come back one day!
