We'll be new to Austin a little more than a week. It looks like there are several different CSA's in town and Farmers Markets. I would imagine it's more economical to sign up with a CSA rather than shop at a Farmer's Market, yes?

Has anyone had a good experience with a CSA in Austin? We'll be on the north side of town, but I don't mind traveling for good produce!

Oooh, or any information on coops where I could get bulk grains and things would be greatly appreciated! (I've heard of Wheatsville, but from what I've seen online it looks like a local Whole Foods - but maybe that is just from people who don't know any better).

Thanks!

Personally I use an organic food delivery service called Greenling (greenling.com). They are wonderful and its great having a bin full of produce delivered to your door every week. They have a local box option that gets lots of raves. I know there are a few CSAs in town, but I don't know much about them and I don't think any deliver.

As for Farmer's Markets there are quite a few. The Austin Farmer's Market has a Saturday morning option downtown and a Wednesday afternoon option in Central Austin. We have been going to the Wednesday afternoon one and it is a blast. Full of kids and they have a fancy sprinkler the kids can play in. There is also a Farmer's Market that meets down south on Saturday mornings, but it isn't my favorite. The Austin Farmer's Market has really become the best market in town. I don't know everything about the local FMs so do a google search.

Welcome to Austin!

Delivery does sound great! Is it much more expensive than buying at a grocery store or farmers market?

Thanks for the tips on the Austin Farmers Market too.

The downtown Saturday morning farmer's market is great--tons of stuff, and a fun festival atmosphere. It's on 4th street at Guadalupe.
Another kind of cool delivery is the Soup Peddler. Not sure what neighborhood you'll be in, but you can get homemade organic soup delivered every week.
Wheatsville is the local co-op. It's worth joining. Whole Foods and Central market are pretty spendy, but I've had dreams about their produce. Both of them sell bulk grains. Actually, a lot of the larger HEB's sell bulk grains too (they own Central Market, or have the same owners, so you can get some central market organic stuff at HEB.)

Do you get the local box? I am curious about how much produce they put in it (is it a reasonable deal?). The website doesn't really say and I know the selection will vary....

I just wanted to add that carol ann (one of the boggy creek farm owners) is a great and funny writer. their website is worth a look around if just for the stories.
