Hello ladies! I am starting to look for pediatricians in the Austin area and most seem pretty set in their ways and schedules with vaccinations, so I figured I would ask here if anyone has any recommendations.
Location isn't a huge issue, we live close to the old Meuller airport in North East Austin, but we're willing to drive for a good doctor if there isn't one close.
Thanks!

Dr. Geoffrey Cox is a Family MD, and he and Dr. Steigler are open to no-vax and alt-vax and are also very supportive of nursing as long as possible.

Bee Caves Pediatrics has gotten good reviews w/re to no-vax and alt-vax, but I know there are mixed opinions. We've gone there and I think it depends on the doctor. It seems like they've been pushing vaxes, but they will be ok if you decide against it. The doctors I've seen there are Dr. Norton, Dr. Ruiz, and Dr. Hudson. (Female, Female, Male). I like Dr. Norton best, though she did try pushing vax.

it may be too far for you but we use kristy heatly, D.O. in georgetown. she is great with my kids and didn't bat an eye when I told her we did not do vax and that I would prefer not to have to reexplain myself about it every visit (I never have been asked since). when I expressed my appreciation for her acceptance of it she told me that she feels it is a parental choice that should be respected by the family doctor. she also told me to feel free to refer families looking for a doctor who is open to not vax to her.
her number is 512.864.2911.

I hear Dr. Christine Eady is starting to fire patients for not vaxing. I have read two accounts of this on the Austin no vax yahoo group. I currently see her with my 4 kids and agree she never gave us grief before, and I am about to take my kids next month for check-up, but I think I am going to cancel because I don't want to pay money for her to kick us out.

Really? I'm not even in Austin anymore and I find that so sad!
Ok, yep it has been confirmed by another member on this message board. So that makes it 3 times I have heard accounts of her firing patients. Such a shame. It is sad when you go in trusting a doctor to be respectful of your parenting decisions and then suddenly turn on you.

I have no experience with this doctor but I have heard she actually refuses to vaccinate children and if you want vaccines you have to go somewhere else. Here is her information: Dr. Ehrin Parker. She is located at 405 Old West Dr. in Round Rock. Her phone number is 255-3631.

I just remembered *why* I did not like Dr. Hudson at Bee Caves...1) He said my DS's food allergies (which manifested in eczema and GI issues, blood in stool, etc) were not based in science and that elimination diets fell into the category of "folk medicine". 2) He nearly manually retracted the foreskin on DS had I not asked what he was doing and told him to stop.

I just called Dr Cox's office (http://www.southoaksfamilymedicine.com/index.htm) b/c I'm fed up with my current pedi and all of the crap she gives me every time I delay or refuse a vax. I have a friend who use to use Dr. Cox for her whole family and loved him. So I was waiting on hold to make new patient apts. for the kids and Dr. Cox accidently picked up my call thinking I was on hold for him. I quickly took the opportunity to ask him how he feels about new patients delaying/refusing vax. Get this...he said "I love getting new patients and who am I to say what you should do with your child". Wow! What a breath of fresh air. I told him that I've talked to plenty of doctors who think they should tell me what to do with my kids when it comes to vax. He also said that he'll give me his opinion, but it's my choice to make. As long as he isn't pushy with his opinion then I'll listen to it.
Sadly, when I tried to make an apt for the kids I was told that he is not taking any new patients on our insurance (my kids are on Chip right now). The receptionist did say that Dr. Steigler is and she is also open to delayed/no vax. We made our appointments with her. I'll post again after I see her and let you know how it goes.
Dr. Cox and Dr. Steigler are family docs. If things go well I might switch to them also.

AustinCrunchyMama---That's too bad about Dr. Cox, but I like Dr. Steigler too! I really, really like them both. My only reservations are the waiting area (since it's a family practice, sometimes I'm turned off by all the sick people) and also, the nurses don't seem to be very friendly or clean. My husband went in a few weeks and saw Dr. Cox, and Dr. C was as usual very good! He was very concerned and had a nurse start an IV of fluids for my DH. But when we got to the back room for the IV, the nurse didn't seem like he knew what he was doing (fumbling, saying "um" to himself, pausing and not asking for help from anyone else), and it was quite honestly very cluttered and grimy. The IV fluid spilled on top of an old cardboard box and the floor, and it looked like it had happened before and never been cleaned. When he took the IV out of DH, some blood splattered on the table, and he just wiped it off with some old bloody gauze and the nurse wasn't wearing gloves. IDK, it's hard for me because like I said, I do like Dr. C and Dr. S --- just not so excited about the cleanliness. That said, I would take them to either one of them if I were really concerned about an issue.

Wow, I wish I had checked this thread earlier! She sounds great - her website is cool. Wonder what insurance she takes... I was just fired by Dr. Eady. NOT a good experience...
