Australian vs. German flat ... so far

Well, today I got my two Australian terry flats and my one German terry flat (I think I bought the last one) from WeeBees. When I first took them out of the package, the German felt 10x softer than the Australian and I was kind of worried. The German's are also bigger. So, I threw them in the wash with some detergent and washed them a few times in a row. At the end I added a little Downey Advanced. Well, after drying them, the German's are still softer, but not by nearly as much. And actually, the Australians are pleasant to the touch. The Australians are smaller, but still work fine on my 18month, 23lb ds just fine in the kite fold. As well, the Australians are a little thicker feeling than the Germans, which seems to make up for the loss in size. I still really like the Germans too ... but they are more expensive and I haven't asked yet at WeeBees when she might get more in. So ... I'm thinking I might get a few more of the Australians.

Anyone else have both to compare?

I don't have both. I do have some of the German. Thanks for the comparison.

Good to know. So how soft is the terry of the Australian ones? (they are terry, right?) I am wondering if they would get crunchy when line dried...

Yes, the Australian ones get really "crunchy" if line dried or even if dryer-dried without fabric softener. The German ones are *much* softer if you don't use fabric softener.

When did you place your order? I'm still waiting for mine to ship from my 6/3 order.

I have both. The Australian is bleached and not as soft as the unbleached German, the German are noticeably softer. I put them in the dryer, no fabric softener. My German are definitely bigger. I think the terry is a little thick for the origami fold, but the kite fold does very nicely.

After washing/drying, the dimensions are approx:
German 26x26"
Austrialian 23x21"

I do wish the Aust were a little softer, but i think they are soft enough to put on DD (put it this way, if it were a towel and i just got out of the shower, i wouldn't think it was too rough). I have found the Aust were a little more absorbant, I think because the terry loops are slightly longer.

The date-stamp on my email confirmation says the morning of 6/3. I got verification on 6/7 and then my stuff was here the next day.

I'll post pics of the flats in action as soon as I get a chance - probably later this afternoon after naptime. The Australian definitely seem a bit more absorbant (at least in terms of immediate wetness through the front) but the German's are definitely softer (and yep, they are both terry). I don't notice a big difference in the size because I use the kite fold for both. And I agree with a pp - I wouldn't hesitate to use the Australian as a towel, so it's not that crunchy, but then again, I don't line dry and I use Downey Advanced with every load.
: I plan on emailing WeeBees to ask when they are getting more German flats in because I'd definitely pay extra for them (about $0.75 more for each one). But I'm not unhappy with the Australians and reach for them without hesitating.

Thanks! I just checked my order status page at WeeBees, and it finally shows them as shipped!
I really like the German ones I already have, and can't wait to have a full dozen of them. They really are soft, and you can get a nice snug fit with them. My German grandma was pretty impressed the other day when I told her that I was using old fashioned German dipes! :LOL

I'm looking forward to trying the Australian ones out.
