Hi, all

I haven't been to this forum in a long time (and even when I was a member, I wasn't much of a joiner), but I thought I'd come back to find a more like-minded space.

My 3 year old son was officially diagnosed with autism last week. This was something that his father and I have believed to be true for a while, but for various reasons had not pursued an official diagnosis up until now. We kind of decided that we couldn't handle it all by ourselves, anymore. We've got the diagnosis now and getting him set up for speech and occupational therapy. The school district wants us to enroll him in the special needs preschool program. No decision on that front yet; we're on the fence. I've planned on homeschooling him and his sister (5) both, but I'm no longer sure I can handle all of it by myself. We're also in the process of going GFCF, and I am very overwhelmed!

I plan on talking more about my son and his issues and the agonising school-or-not decision, but right now I'm a little pinched on time (and sleep deprived...), so I'm just going to ask about supplements right now. Basically, since my brain is on the fritz, I need you to think for me and help me decide on supplements. So, if you have an ASD kiddo, what supplements do you give your children and why? My son takes a fruit and veggie supplement (very picky eater w/ sensory issues), a vit/min supplement, a calcium supplement and during the winter a vit C/zinc/echinacea supplement. I can occasionally get him to drink natural calm at night, but only sometimes, and it doesn't seem to help his sleep issues much. :/

Thank you!

Well, my biggest piece of advice is to go slow and think about things. There is no rush to do anything. So breath and sink into the diagnosis a bit if you need to.
http://www.enzymestuff.com/conditionpdd.htm This whole site on enzymes is really useful I think and this link about autism with the list the author gives is sort of how I would approach things if I had it to do over again. I didn't do it this way but if I could again I would.

Enzymes might be a good alternative to food restrictions to start. See the above site. Houston Labs are good.

Probiotics if there are any digestion issues (I like culturelle, florastor, Klaire Labs)

For casein free without dairy sources I like calcium/vit D but I also like to combine that with vitamin K (and magnesium of course) for utilizing that calcium.

Fish oil is a nice brain healthy fat for most kids if you can find a form he'll take.

If there aren't good zinc sources in the diet (for many picky eaters there aren't) I like optizinc broken to the child's dose. Dose zinc away from calcium. All minerals should be kept apart.

I've got picks on most other supplements out there if those are needed for a particular child (folapro folic acid, bisglycinate form of iron, etc.) but if I could start over it would be simpler. And I would not stress myself out trying to do it all at once.

The most important thing is that you and he live life and enjoy as much as possible. Keep focus on that.

Welcome!!

The best advice I can give is to decide why you want to give supplements.

Since supplements don't cure Autism or help it in anyway for the Autism itself... my question to you is probably more like what underlying thing are you wanting to treat with supplements?

Does he have a sensitivity to a certain type of food? Is he deficient in a vitamin or are there specific effects that you see that are realted to one of the deficits that you are trying to combat?

For us, my DS has a sensitivity to Casien. It can "exagerate" his Autistic quirks because of how his body deals with the sensitivity. But the food sensitivity doesn't actually cause his quirks, that's just him. But by limiting his Casien his body is better able to process things and doesn't get stuck on that. He is overall healthier. This would apply to my NT children as well, we are just able to see the effects in my ASD child more.

My brain is fried at the moment because it's so late here. I'll send you a PM. I have found going gfcf and doing supplements to be very helpful to my DD.

Actually, I haven't even decided whether or not to give him any supplements other than the ones he's already on. I just became very overwhelmed researching various supplements and thought I'd ask other parents of asd kids what supplements they found useful and hat effect they had on their kiddos.

I've been reading a lot abot enzymes and autism, and I keep hearing people talk about giving their asd child with sleep issues melatonin. But I was hoping there'd be some parents on here willing to share their stories and give me some ideas.

As for supplements not "curing autism", yes, I know that. I don't think he needs "cured" at any rate. Like I said, I just was hoping some other parents would share some ideas with me.

I'm on some of those boards and I have a few of those books. You deserve a big thank you for putting together that list. It's a great resource. I wonder if we could get it to be a sticky on this forum.

Dr. Jaquelyn McCandless is doing a free seminar in my home state where she lives part of the year. I'm really looking forward to it.

My kids get multivitamins, probiotics, and fish oil daily. That's it.

When there's a cold going around or someone's coming down w/ something, I have echinacea, elderberry extract, and Emergen-C.

We tried the enzymes, but my kids and I all get horrible gas, cramps, and diarrhea from them. Even if we start off w/ a small amount. I don't know what's up w/ that, and haven't really heard of anyone else having the same problem. (the only ones available at our local HFS were Enymedica brand, so we didn't try any other kinds.)

In the Autism Biomed Community (especially if you visit some of the boards), you will see dozens and dozens of posts about 'yeast die-off.' This is extremely common when you introduce probiotics, Oil of Oregano, antifungals or any other methods that are used to eliminate or reduce candida, arabinose and some of the others in teh yeast/ fungus family. Yeast die off varies from person to person depending on how much yeast/ fungus and how aggressively you treat it. It usually only lasts 3-4 days. You can minimize the side effects by taking activated charcoal (sold in any healthfood store) a coule hours after you have taken the probiotic. Read the information about yeast. It is amazing how it can affect all of us, not just our kids.

I am pretty sure it was NOT yeast die-off. I've seen that before plenty of times. We have been on probiotics for several years now. We tried the enzymes last year, or maybe the year before that. We had been on probiotics for at least 2 years when we started the enzymes. I was on the enzymes for about 2 months before I started having problems with them. I didn't change brands or anything. I have some mild food allergies that manifest as GI symptoms, and honestly, it really seemed like I had developed an allergy to the enzymes. I figured, well, I can't take them, but around that time, the HFS started carrying a powder enzyme mix just for kids (also Enzymedica brand) so I got if for them. They also got sick from it. I actually don't think Damien did, but I didn't buy anymore b/c he gave me a really hard time about drinking it anyway, and it didn't seem worth the effort. I really have talked to people about this before and have yet to meet anyone who's had a reaction like I did after taking the enzymes religiously for as long as I did.

Do you think the company could have added a new ingredient to the enzyme? I know some people who have issues w/ certain enzymes because of the additives. Hope you find an answer. We use enzymes as a means to treat yeast, as well as w/ breaking down foods.

Honestly, even befoer they started making me sick, I wasn't seeing a difference in my digestion issues. I'm not sure it's worth the bother of finding out if something changed (the label hadn't changed, so that's doubtful) or to try another brand. They're really expensive. Not all supplements help everyone as much as they help some. We definitely see the benefit of probiotics. The fish oil, we don't SEE a difference, but I'm sure it's good for them, so I keep buying it.

They're definitely worth a try, but I don't think there's any supplement that EVERYONE will benefit from (other than probiotics, of course, but I don't really consider that a supplement. It's more putting in your body what's supposed to be there in the first place, but a lot of us are missing b/c of our modern environment.) KWIM? Same w/ GF/CF. It helps some, not others, but is worth the try, b/c you dn't know until you try if it will help your family or not. I think it DID help my family, but we're not currently following it. We just can't afford it right now, and it didn't make a HUGE difference, just a small one. I am planning on getting back on that sometime in the near future when dh graduates and is making more money.
