Hi,

I just went to my RE for the first time today for recurrent miscarriage issues.

Ironically, I just got a +HPT last night, so we can't actually begin the testing for miscarriage issues right now.

However, based on his review of my history, and family history, he strongly suspects autoimmune issues to be the cause of my recurrent miscarriages.

I was wondering if anyone else has had these issues, specifically, what tests they ran, and what your protocols were for subsequent pregnancies.

This is a whole new arena for me. I had been happy with my midwives, and now I'm facing a medicalized-full of tests pregnancy.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Michelle.

Oh Michelle, I don't have any info for you but wanted to say I'm so happy for your BFP! Hoping this pregnancy goes smoothly for the entire 9 more months

I'm thinking that might happen to me this month...BFP right before I go in to the RE

Michelle, In addition to the book I recommended on TTC #1 30's (Is Your Body Baby Friendly? by Dr. Alan Beer), you may want to go to the website of Dr. Christo Zouves, another pioneer in immunology issues: goivf.com He's in the Bay Area and I know they do free phone consult. if you had any questions, they might be amenable to helping.
You may find some helpful links or info. there. I know also there is a famous yahoo chat group for immunology begun by a woman who worked with Dr. Beer, Rose something maybe? Sorry maybe you could find it on a google search.
I'm just totally thinking about you hon.

Rach, GL with your RE! I hope you're preg. by then too!

Oh good, it's a whole different game than natural preg. care but I found it very informative. Did the RE tell you what your progest. level was 7 dpo and what it was now? Did he check your betas?
This must be such a mixed bag of emotions, being preg. but being told to be so very cautious about it. I want to help you!!!!

:

Congrats on your +hpt. I hope that this is a sticky one. Did your doc say which autoimmune issues s/he thought might be affecting you? Did you have a p4 (progesterone) level drawn? There are actually some tests you can have done during pregnancy. My autoimmune issue is ATAs (antithyroid antiboides) and I have my thyroid function checked throughout pregnancy to keep tabs on it. The autoimmune panel is quite extensive and tests can be done at different points, so I'd be sure to ask which ones your doctor thinks are most apropos for you and which ones might be most helpful at this point in time. I'd also ask if perhaps any of the other tests like thrombophilic risk factors might be relevant.

GL!

Poet, I know, it IS a far cry from the natural pregnancy that I have always hoped for. But, the end goal, healthy baby, remains the same!

YummyYarn The Dr. hasn’t said which autoimmune issues he suspects. Since I got the + HPT before my first appointment, we’re waiting to see what happens with this pregnancy first, which tests can be done during pregnancy? He did mention that he didn't think it would be worth testing during pregnancy....hmmm.

I had progesterone levels drawn at 7DPO this cycle, and he said that was on the lowest edge of normal (I forgot the exact #).

I had a HCG beta done yesterday, and at 20DPO it was 904, and will have it repeated tomorrow.

Because the autoimmune testing is going to be written up as recurrent pregnancy loss testing, he is sure my insurance will cover it, hopefully.

Fiber lover, first off congrats!!!!!! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed : for a sticky one this time. I also have a family history of auto immune issues and been told I have a + ANA and haven't had any luck even getting a BFP yet (after almost a yr & 1/2). I truly think that it is the immune issues and when I mentioned that to my RE that I have been seeing he wasn't too interested and felt it has nothing to do with it. (i don't agree). I also read the book "is your body baby friendly?" by dr beer and mentioned that too him too and that really set him off. He said that he has heard that that guy is or may be going to jail for his writings and who knows what else. I also had a whole list of immune tests that Beer recommended that I had written down to show him to see if any were necessary or would be helpful. My thought is why not check this stuff out before I have to go and pay the big bucks for IUI or IVF and end up finding out that my body is not "baby friendly" b/c of immune issues. Makes sense to me but not to him for some reason maybe b/c that way we have to do the procedure more times which means more $$$ for them. He finally gave in and said he would order whatever test I wanted but didn't know if my insurance would pay for it and said for me to call them but just happened to not tell me any codes so they couldn't help me out when I called.

Also, here is a website that I found in my research that I thought was helpful that has several immune tests listed. Lets just hope you won't even need them but just in case here it is...http://www.sharedjourney.com/imm.html

Keep us posted or feel free to PM me anytime. If you do end up getting some testing done, I'd be interested in hearing what all they do. Good luck and take care!
