Yesterday on my way to my nephew's birthday party I drove past a car dealership offering a free car seat check. On my way home it was still open so I decided to stop, since I have always wanted to have them checked but I've never had a chance before. Let me just say I am so glad I did. I thought they'd just check the installation really quick and we'd be on our way. Nope. They removed all four of my seats, weighed and measured my children, checked the serial numbers and models for recalls, and then they dropped a bomb on me. The seat my 3 year old had been riding in was manufactured in 1997!!!!!!!! I almost burst into tears. I never checked it because my mom had given it to me and I just assumed she knew about expiration dates and stuff. Once I recovered from the shock, they brought out one of those 5-point harness type seats and they just gave it to us!!!!!!! We couldn't have afforded a new seat right now so this was just an amazing gift. This time I did cry and I thanked them so much. Then they inspected my older son's seat, which is one of those booster seats that is just a seat. They said that since my car's headrest didn't come up to his head he wasn't safe in that one, and they gave us a high back booster for him!!!!!! Then they took out my little ones' seats, refitted them in the car and helped me get them buckled in a lot tighter. I got so many of my questions answered and they were so friendly and they were so happy to see my 16 month old still rear facing even though he is 30 lbs. His seat goes up to 35 lbs. rear facing. Anyway, I'm just so thankful and the gifts they gave us of safer seats for my big guys was just such an amazing gift. All I had on me was $5 but I put it in the donation jar and just hoped that enough people donated money that day to continue this service. I am so thankful. It was a great day.
